Bugger all, again! It's about fuggin' time the Game & Fish did something about the draw system, most every other state at least offers a preference point but not NM, oh no. How about this: if you draw this year, you can't apply next year? Institute a preference point system that allows you to gain a point if you can't apply like they do in Utah & you start to get a little more equal to other states. On a way more radical note, how about if you were born in an even numbered year, you can only apply in an even numbered year? Opposite way round for odd years obviously. So I was born in 1967 & so I would be able to apply this year but not next year, what say the peanut gallery?? A dispensation could be made for fathers & sons 'natch but I'm just throwing out ideas that might make the whole thing a bit fairer for all concerned. I guess Splat & I will be looking for landowner tags & be content with going to WY for antelope & CO for Elk I guess.......

Gman,
I did not draw this year, but due to the fact that Colorado cow tags are still pretty reasonable, I do not get worked up over the NM system any more. It has to be corrupt. I cannot think of one good reason we do not have a preference point system. The computer system is in place. I cannot believe adding Points could be all that difficult to deal with now. Unless someone can explain to me otherwise. I have to believe it is about revenues and money stream. The way it is now, they know how much money they can generate. With a PP system, their income would be more cyclical, up and down, as some years more NM residents could conceivably draw more tags. Boy wouldn't that be unfair. I think the root of the problem is that the Game Department is only mangaing for greatest amount of money, which I guess they would argue is better for the game. The problem is that they are supposed to manage our game in a way that would balance the critters and the owners of the game, US. This state is pretty fouled up, but that is one of the resaons I live here. At my local level, the government is so fouled up within themselves, they have little time to try and foul my life

Drew deer and elk.
GMAN–– Anyone who drew a Q/HD hunt this year can not apply for ANY Q/HD unit next year. New rule. That said, in most Q units it isn't going to improve draw odds for rifle hunts. Most are figuring 2% best case. The hunts in the Gila it is like 1/2 of a percent. |

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, JUNE 24, 2009:
COMMISSION WILL CONSIDER CHANGING DEER LICENSE DRAWING DATES SANTA FE –– The State Game Commission will meet July 2 at Heron Lake State Park to consider changing the date of the annual application deadline and drawing for deer hunting licenses, and to set season dates and bag limits for 2009-10 small game and waterfowl seasons.
The meeting will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, July 2, at the visitor center of Heron Lake State Park, approximately 13 miles south of Chama on N.M. 95, three miles off U.S. 84. The full agenda, detailed agenda-item briefings and other information are available on the Department of Game and Fish Web site, www.wildlife.state.nm.us or by calling (505) 476-8008. The Commission will consider moving the application deadline for deer licenses from April to February to give hunters who are successful in the draw the opportunity to buy discounted licenses including junior, senior and combination licenses, which are available after March 31 annually. In addition, the Commission will consider a proposal to simplify the deer licensing process by eliminating the deer hunting permit. Successful applicants would be issued a deer license, similar to the way elk, antelope and other big-game licenses currently are issued. If approved, the hunting license drawings would be: February: Deer, oryx, bear WMA permits, population-management hunts, special turkey. April: Elk, antelope, ibex, Barbary sheep, javelina, bighorn sheep. Exact dates for drawing application deadlines will be established at a future Commission meeting. Other agenda items include: A proposal to set season dates and adjust some bag limits for the 2009-2010 small game and waterfowl seasons. The proposal includes adding a youth sandhill crane hunt on the Bernardo and Casa Colorada waterfowl areas, increasing the dove seasons from 60 days to 70 days in the north and south zones, increasing the daily and seasonal bag limit to two birds for the Middle Rio Grande Valley dark goose hunt, and requiring a free permit for hunts during the Light Goose Conservation Order. An update on the Mexican wolf reintroduction program, including project activities, status, opportunities and prospects for the future. A progress report on efforts to improve the San Juan River special trout fishery and results of the most recent angler survey. Final approval of Habitat Stamp Program projects for 2010, as recommended by five regional citizen advisory committees. The State Game Commission is composed of seven members who represent the state’s diverse interests in wildlife-associated recreation and conservation. Members are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the state Senate. Current members are Chairman Jim McClintic, Albuquerque; Vice-chairwoman Sandy Buffett, Santa Fe; M.H. “Dutch” Salmon, Silver City; Alfredo Montoya, Alcalde; Leo Sims, Hobbs; Tom Arvas, Albuquerque; and Kent Salazar, Albuquerque. |

Most are figuring 2% best case. The hunts in the Gila it is like 1/2 of a percent. I hear you on that but why can't we have preference points in this fooking state? Seems pretty bloody simple to me; if you draw, your points are wiped out. If you don't draw but apply, you will get a point. Sooner or later, more points will mean you get drawn. If something like one third of applicants get drawn, that would mean that on average, you could look forward to going hunting in your own state at least once every three years. If the ratio is one fourth got drawn, well, it should be you'll go hunting once every four years. Splat & I said balls to it & we got drawn for antelope in WY in September, 2 doe/fawn tags at $48 each tag. We have the choice to buy leftover tags in adjoining units (our unit has 7 tags left over so not much chance of bagging four of them) for the same $48 each to a max of a total of 4 tags each.
This year in CO, we should have horses so over the hill in the dark timber will be in play, watch out elk, I'm coming to getcha, either with a 6.8 or .499 LW AR15 or a .358 Win FAL if I can get it built in time......
