Thinking about making a trip from Illinois to visit Goliad. Anyone have suggestions about where to stay or places to stay away from?

Well, I don't know where you'd need to stay away from, Goliad is in the middle of nowhere, and its not like there is any big cities like Dallas with crappy areas...

Its a neat place, of course you will go and see the Presidio La Bahia, which is a little way down the road from the town of Goliad, which is very cool. Supposedly the only intact complete Presidio left in the US....

ETA The Presidio is where the action actually took place...the monument to Fannin and his men is nearby....

Seeing it is a lot different than seeing the Alamo, which is in the middle of a big city...the Presidio and the area around it looks probably very much like it did in 1835, and its much easier to look out and imagine what it might have been like then.

How long are you staying? I would suggest seeing Goliad and the Presidio, and Gonzales is not too far away (home of the Gonzales flag, an the opening shots of the Texas Revolution were fired there, Come and Take It!)....lots of beautiful old house in Gonzales too.

You could also hit Shiner, and do the brewery tour if you like beer....

You can spend the night at La Bahia.  I think it is $200 a night and sleeps 4.

I'd head down to the coast if you have traveled that far.  Rockport-Fulton has some quanit places and you'd get GREAT seafood.

Thanks for the recommendations. Ya'll have been very helpful. I'm from TX but haven't been in the Goliad area before so wasn't sure what to expect.

I read that the battlefield at San Jacinto was re-seeded/shaped several years ago so it more closely resembles how it was originally. I think I'll stop by there, too. Any suggestions for San Jacinto?

I think the battleship Texas is nearby...that's high on my list to see...but I am a Navy ship junkie....

San Jacinto is pretty awesome if you get down to the Mexican encampment and walk about 1/3 mile towards the Battleship Texas. It seems flat but there is a natural defilade that allowed the Texans to march right up to the Mexican camp without being seen. It's only about 7 feet but would have afforded the entire Texian Army a complete surprise. Use the Mexican cannon battery as a frame of reference and walk out from it.

Battleship Texas is well worth the time too.

Goliad is a nice sleepy little town, the only happening place is the Whataburger. If I remember right there is only one motel in town and it's usually full of oilfield workers.

It's a very nicely preserved state park, they were doing renovations on the chapel a while back.

I would suggest making it a day and then heading over to Rockport spend the night, pretty good food to be found there.

Nicest town square I've ever seen.  Beautiful ornate courthouse.

But best of all (besides the great scenery) is getting the weather
forecast in the town square via song.  IE: if it's going to rain you
might hear "Stormy Weather", or "Blue Skies" for a sunny day.

I live about 30 minutes away and have never been inside it. We've snuck around it in the middle of the night though. I need to go some day. Like others have said, there's not much in goliad, but there's a lot of history and things to do if you don't mind driving.
