My wife, son and I have lived in FL for 2 years now, but haven’t gone camping yet.

We live in St Johns County and used to enjoy tent camping at campgrounds when we lived in Washington state (camped in Oregon mostly).

What areas are good for camping? Ocala National Forest?

Thanks in advance!

Gold head branch near Keystone heights is pretty good and closer too you.   Lots of options in the Ocala National Forest.  There is a place with tree house camping in Green Cove Springs also.

Fort Clinch in Fernandina has tent camping and is on the beach.

Camp Chowenwaw is the site in Green Cove that offers tree house camping.

Ok - F' all that noise........

Best Camping in Florida (I should not even put this out there.....)

Go to the Suwannee River Music Park - go to the Suwannee River Canoe Outpost in the back of the park. (not right now as the water is way up from Debbie....)

Have them rent you a canoe and tote you up to White Springs - 20 miles up river...you float back to your truck/car

Two easy 10 miles days - about 5 hours each.

You can either camp on the sugar sand beaches next to the river....or the Wood Ferry River Camp if you want full facilities...

Your welcome....

Edit to add - if you catch it right in the spring - the woods are full of wild azaleas...beautiful!

Gold Head is one of my favorite state parks. Suwannee is hard to beat, though.

I wouldn't say Ocala has great camping but I'd hit up the springs. Alexander, Juniper, Salt to name a few.

Plus 1 on the Suwannee River Camps. It's an adventure. I had heard about the them and finally got a chance to use one of the little screened cabins on a recent float super cool and easy to reserve. Usually rented on some white sand beach but Ceiling fans, showers on a river trip unheard of.....oh yeah free besides service fee for using the vendor's reservation system.

@deputygadget

I thought that Woods Ferry was first come first served - no reservation....besides I would rather camp on one of the many beaches....

So they have a reservation system for the cabins and tent sites at the river camps just like a regular paid site in the parks they are free minus the service fee for the website. I suppose if you called someone it would really be free. I'm not sure how it works when you have a conflict, but it gave me piece of mind so I didnt carry tents just an emergency tarp if all hell broke loose and there was a conflict. You can pick your cabin and tent spot and it shows unavailable after you reserve it.

Website is worse than ATF E forms.

Now you've gone and done it.  But seriously this is the answer.

there are several small county run campgrounds in the Big Bend/Nature Coast area.  Shell Mound campground near Cedar Key is one I've camped at before. No reservations cash only.
Just beware of the Great Florida Yankee Repellant.

@toyotaman

Oh you know it...

It is the best place to be in all of Florida!  You are recessed down in the river - have a camp site all to your self...

and there are three levels of camping...

Car camping - take anything you want...
Backpack camping - take nothing and watch the weight...

Kayak Camping - take anything in reason...all my stuff is backpack grade - so I am taking chairs, tables, air mattresses. LOL

depending on what you want to do

Hanna park is pretty much right on the ocean if you want that access :

further west in FL (not really NE FL) but one i'd recommend if you're up for a longer drive toward Tallahassee is Torreya State Park :
