A friend of mine that lives in East Troy recently inherited a Colt Python .357 Magnum revolver that he described as "needing some work done". Anyway, does anyone know of a reputable gunsmith––especially one that is good with revolvers––that I could steer him towards? Thanks in advance.

Send it back to Colt imo.  Unless what he's looking for is something custom.

Thanks, Thrawn...I have no idea what work he needs/wants done on the piece, so it leaves a lot to the imagination as to where to go to have it serviced. Thanks. BTW, I've never owned anything Colt...how is their Customer Service? Would they still honor a warranty? Again, no idea how old it is or what serial number, if he has the warranty information, etc.

Limited Lifetime Service Agreement

Colt will repair any factory defective part(s) of your Colt firearm, but cosmetic corrections and grip replacement will be made only during the first year, in accordance with the Colt Warranty Statement which you will find in your Colt Instruction Manual.

Limitations

This agreement will not apply to your Colt firearm when it is altered, abused, willfully damaged or damaged by overpressure ammunition. Moreover, this agreement will not apply to those parts of your Colt firearm which have been “tuned” or “gunsmithed” for performance other than customized tuning and other services provided by Colt Custom Gun Shop.

This agreement is not transferable; its benefits apply only to the original retail purchaser for firearms manufactured after 1996.  Mike's comment: Not sure how this works with pre-1996 firearms..?

FWIW, I found Colt's service to be expensive if they won't cover it under warranty.  But it IS Colt, so this shouldn't come as a surprise.  If the gun has been neglected and is rusty pitted, etc., they shouldn't plan on getting a dime's worth of coverage on ANYTHING.  But if they got it for next to nothing/nothing, hey- it's a %$#@! Python that they're only paying to have made as beautiful as possible at the factory!  Can't complain too much about that!

I had a Colt Trooper eons ago that I sent back to Colt for repair. Once they recieve it they asses and send you a letter telling you the cost to repair. Send money back and then they fix and return. That said, they never did fix it right and I sold it off for another gun. Gun was laced with really bad juju, so ditching it was no big deal.

This was my experience but minus the bad repair job.  I had a Python sent back for timing issues and a re-blue.  The gun works fantastic but the bluing is not up to their old standards for Royal Blue.  I'm told it cannot turn out as nice due to EPA regs and that they can't use certain stuff anymore.

As an update, my friend said that his .357 Python needs re-bluing and a timing check. He reported that firing in Single Action was fine, but double action was giving him problems. He said he'd look into a "Ron's Gun Shop" in Oshkosh. I've never heard of them; only Precision Sports on State Road 44. Thanks for the input guys.

When I got my Python I was looking at having it checked to make sure it was in perfect time. I checked the internet, especially the Colt forums. According to the "Colt Guys", from what I understand there are like three or four guys in the country that do good work on the Python and your best bet is to send it to Colt so that it doesn't get messed up.

Seems most of the custom guys are backlogged and Colt is quicker and their prices are about same anyway according to my research.

Edited to add: I haven't sent mine in yet as I don't shoot it and I'm still deciding if I'm going to have it all re-blued. My cylinder needs bluing but I want to make sure it all matches perfectly. Mechanically it seems fine I just wanted it checked.
