It's a funny thing. I'd be quite happy climbing inside the structure, clipped on or not, but climbing outside would make me a very unhappy bunny. I think it's the illusion of security. I'm perfectly happy hanging out of a helicopter or upside down in an open cockpit plane, but clearing the gutters scares the crap out of me........ |

Nope, and it's funny the situations you find yourself in sometimes. As a young, stupid Bobby I once scaled the outside of scaffolding on Cheltenham Town hall to the roof (four storeys) in pursuit of burglars. Never thought about it until afterwards. Bloody stupid thing to do, and said I'd never do anything like that again................
Now I'm just old and stupid |

The height is is not the issue - a fall from 70 feet will kill just as easily as a fall from up there. I remember them teaching some Paras doing P Coy - they got them to walk balance beams set 4 feet high. All had no problem. In fact some were running them. Put the same guys on the same beams 20 feet up and many totally froze. |

The tallest antenna tower I've climbed was only 120m - ladder outside of the tower with the hoops round it. When you're climbing it looks very easy to fall between the hoops!! No safety lines on that tower until you got to the top - great view, but the tower seemed to move quite a lot!
In the UK, the only towers I've seen on BBC/NTL sites had a track running next to the ladder that your safety line attached to - if you fall, the gadget attached to the track locked so you could only drop a couple of metres... |

I would like to see the rescue plan for that one, even if he was clipped on when he fell who's going to rescue him? Cough Lol.
Or you could do it like the movies & the pilot swings the winchman over to the tower.
