Been lurking on this website for a while, but I thought I'd make my first post here.

I just found out I get to move to your great state, and thought I'd see if anyone can help me with a couple of questions I have.

Are "assault weapons" banned in Ohio?  And does Ohio have a preemption law to stop the "legal in this city, but not in that one" problem?  The NRA website wasn't a lot of help and Google gives me all kinds of hits from about 2006.

Appreciate any help and info on the area!  I'm going to be moving to Athens to be at the college there (Ohio U).  I've only been in Ohio once travelling on I80 westbound, that never really counts, so I don't know what to expect.

Oh, and what do you call someone from Ohio?  (You know, the Ohio version of Montanan, West Virginian, etc.)  Is it Ohioan?  That just sounds wrong.

Nothing is banned here, it is a free state, and yes there is a pre-emption law.

Some area CLEO are harder on NFA's than other, but most are pretty cool if you aren't in  larger city.

Sending you a big welcome from Toledo!

Yeah Ohioans is the proper term. Ohio is pretty decent on gun owners. Even here in one of it's major cities the police (most "beat" cops anyways) would prefer the (law abiding) citizens to be armed.

Only rule in Ohio is watch your speed, They love to pull over speeders, That and out of state cars get watched a little closer to catch drug runners, So some look for any "infraction" to pull you over and hope to score.

However I have yet to be pulled over on either I-80, or I-75. I'd say I've put on around 7500 miles in travel of Ohio (just in 2+ hour trips) in the past 5 years

Thanks for the replies, got one more for the group––how hard is it to get a CCW permit there?

12 hour class, basic NRA Pistol class (Can you name the parts of a pistol) including 2 hours of range time (note - time not necc. marksmanship).

It is simple.  Being from out of state there is some form of residency requirement, and the background check cost more b/c they will run it through the FBI instead of Columbus.

One thing to note (this has gotten some people), you will be DQ'd for felonies, violence and drug offenses including Juvi crimes that would have been the above had you been an adult at the time of the offense...

Also might want to throw out there, while I think about, if you a misd. drug convistion you are under what is called disibility and wil not be permitted to purchase a firearm as an Ohio resident unless you get this lifted.  If you had a misd. drug crime when you where 18 and are 40 now and have not had any other marks on your record, this can usually be taken care of by a lawer and a few letters, from what I hear.  Hopefully none of tis applies to you.
