I got a little bored today and thought I would start pulling some stats from the federal goverment. All these numbers are from 2008 unless otherwise stated. All these numbers can also be verified by pulling the data I have pulled from the different websites. Also, I only recorded 2008 but just looking quickly, the numbers will be about the same for the last few years.
In 2008 there were 16,272 murders to include 245 citizen justifiable homicides and 371 law enforcement justifiable homicides. Of these 10,886 involved the use of a firearm to include the justifiable homicides. There were also 773,591 aggravated (felony) assaults. 153,476 involved the use of a firearm, less than the 240,996 other weapons (clubs, etc.) and the 189,334 hands/fists/feet used. This was all from the FBI's website. Now, in 2007, 830 people were killed accidentally by a firearm. Less then 1% of all accidental deaths in the U.S. You had a greater chance dying from a fall, posion, fires, and suffocation not to mention a motor vehicle accident. This was from the National Safety Councils website. Last but not least, in 2008 37,261 people were killed in traffic accidents, 11,773 involved alcohol. 2,072,000 people were injured in traffic accidents. This was from the NHTSA website. So, from looking at these numbers, more people were killed in 2008 from alcohol related traffic accidents then firearms. More people were injured (almost 3x) from traffic accidents then aggravated assaults. Firearms were only number three in weapons used in the aggravated assaults. And firearms are about the least dangerous thing that the NSC tracks in accidental deaths. Pull the data. Make a cheat sheet to include the numbers and websites. Use this to educate the people who don't know and to correct the gun control people who do. Just remember, be nice. |
