I just moved from MD and the make shift homeowners policy that I picked up to get me through closing only insures up to $2k for firearms, so I'm looking to add some additional coverage.  I'm not sure whether to try and get additional coverage through my existing company, get a specific firearms policy or start from scratch with a new homeowners policy.

Right now, I am with Southern and they are looking for serial numbers, pictures, etc. However, it would probably be slightly cheaper than the NRA insurance which wants anything over $2k declared individually anyway.

I realize that there have been a few threads in GD on this subject, but insurance, even with the same company, varies greatly from state to state.  So I'm looking for whatever advice and experience you all can offer.

Also, if you're going to come and take my guns please wait a few weeks until I have a policy bound

If you are an NRA member, you can get $1000 of insurance from just being a member.

Try Northern Neck Insurance Co. I used to have Travelers, but my premiums went from $550 to $800 due to the hurricanes in Florida and Nawlins. Northern Neck does not sell policies outside of Virginia, so they did not have the gigantic losses that all the big insurance companies had after Katrina and all the other storms. I'm now paying under $400 for the same coverage that I had under Travelers. Northern Neck is the greatest!

I thought about this before, I rent and have renter's insurance but does that cover guns? I'm guessing this depends on the policy.

Edit- I see homesite covers up to $2000 for firearms.

I'm with nationwide and my wife is my insurance agent, a big +, so she had me take a seperate policy out for my guns. It is for around $15k worth of guns. I listed everything, # of mags and accessories per gun with a replacement value.  Down side ammo isn't covered. I pay about a little over $200 annually. It also gave me a discount for having multiple policies. So check with you homeowners and see if they offer.

i'm with USAA and they allow you to do individual riders on your HOI policy for guns....I called and updated it just a week ago...I get a certain amount of coverage with the policy, but I then added specifically, gun by gun, so they are specifically covered

you can do it with USAA for lots of things, my wife's rings, etc etc

Im with nationwide myself and I just added a rider to the home owners policy. I need to get the guns apraised and put replacement value on it as well. I think right now it only covers them for $8000.00. Im sure I could replace them for that but with the prices going up I need to look into it more. I need to look into insuring my mags didnt know you could do that.

Yeah, I just listed each gun with the mags next to them in each picture and put a seperate price per mag replacement. They won't cover any class 3 stuff though. My wife's boss thinks I'm nuts when he saw 20 and 30 mags lined up next to a couple of the guns.

State Farm has $2500 coverage for firearms, which you can bump up as necessary.  No need for SNs or anything, but they suggest taking pictures of everything (guns or otherwise) for proof of ownership.  When I get around to it, I'm going to get pictures of all my crap onto a thumb drive and store in an off-site location (safe deposit box).

I just wanted to chime in and say, that is an excellent idea. Always be able to provide pictures for proof of ownership. Flash drives are cheap too.

I talked to the wife last night about it and it is called an inland marine policy. It is seperate from my homeowners, so if I make a claim it won't go against my home policy. It also only has a $50 deductable. It covers anything and anywhere. If I had the gun stolen out of my car or had a "boating accident" they would be covered. Sweet.
