The guys at the Olathe Gun shop said there was a rifle range not too far from Cabelas. I believe the name is Parma Woods. Anyone shot there? How was it?

Thanks

Nice setup.  Like the previous poster said the range masters can be total dicks.  They seem to get off on barking commands and making people feel stupid.  I kind of chuckled when a range guy came down to inspect the line during a cease fire.  He made a comment on how my AK did not have the bolt locked back properly.  As he continued to handle my weapon with his finger INSIDE the trigger guard I politely explained that this one does not have that feature.  Total TOOL.

Be warned, if you are shooting military rifles, they will ask to see your ammo.  They then check it with a magnet.  If it responds, they don't allow you to shoot.  A lot of the Eastern European surplus ammo uses copper/iron mixes for their jackets, so even if they aren't steel core penetrator ammo, it still reacts to a magnet.

It gets busy on weekends, so you don't get a whole lot of shooting time in.  Unfortunately, it is the only public range on this side of town.  Target stands can be set at 25/50/75/100yds on the rifle side and 7/15/25 on the pistol side.  1 shot every three seconds, no holster draws, standard public range stuff...

Thanks, that is what I have been looking for around here.  Somewhere I can try out new ammo with out going through too much hassle.

Do have to be a resident of Missouri to use the range? Do you have to have a Missouri Hunting license.

Has anyone heard of Mill Creek in Desoto? Good, bad , ugly?

Millcreek requires a membership to shoot there I believe.  Not too sure on that though.  I have driven out there and it seems to be a nice place.  Try Pidgeon Hill conservation area up by St. Joe.  Only about 30 minutes further than the Parma range.  It has a 25, 50 and 100 yard setups that are uncontrolled.  Weekends can get busy but everyone there seems to safe and decent.

Yeah Mill Creek is something like $375 to join, $75 per year after that but they have a 300 yard range I believe.  I'm seriously contemplating it.  I make the drive to Clinton as it is to shoot at Golden Valley right now.

I've heard some really bad things about gun safety at both Pigeon Hill and Golden Valley.  I won't head to a non-manned public range unless I can get the range to myself.

Both Mill Creek and Tri-County on the Kansas side have nice rifle ranges.  They are both private and require memberships.  Tri-county has a couple of year waiting list.  Mill Creek requires sponsorship from a current member.

And you don't need to be a MO resident to shoot at their ranges.

I don't hit the range on the weekends (I work weekends) so I generally always have the range to myself.

I am a member at Mill Creek.  It is expensive to get in, but well worth it.  You can even shoot your 50BMG there.  I use to shoot at Parma Woods, but 100yds is limiting and having to put up with the rangers was just a pain.  There's alot more room at Mill Creek and most of the time hardly anyone there when you go on weekdays. You can shoot from 6am till 10pm.  2 of the pistol ranges have lights as well. I LOVE IT!

I'm really considering it.  I mean seriously considering it.  You guys do have a 300yd range, correct?  I think one of my girlfriend's friend's dads is a member there.  I may have to ask him if he has some more info on it.

There are several clubs that use the Millcreek range. You can go to a match to check it out if you want.  They do bowling pins every Wendesday night (info here) and IPSC on the 2nd Saturday (info)

I keep thinking I need to join there but you can shoot the matches without being a member.

Yes, one range has 100, 200, 300 with concrete benches, and the sniper range is 100, 200, and 300 as well.  I think at one point in time they were thinking of increasing the sniper range to 500 yds, but I have not heard anything lately.  They have also installed a key card gate. The last time I was there it had not gone into operation, but I did receive my card in the mail so I am assuming it will be running soon. There are no range masters so you dont have to deal with that, but there are rules to be followed.

Here is a photo at the range.  You can see that it is not exactly crowded.  In the warmer months they have competitions on the weekends, which of course would make it more crowded.  I usually go on fridays since I have 3 day weekends.  I also get to shoot my baby here!

That's really tempting!  I may have to pony up the money so I can start shooting more and more.

I drove by Mill Creek last week and it looks really nice. Any ideas about who to contact on membership info?
