I am looking for the best place / price to buy a gunsafe in Michigan. Fireproof, tumbler vs. electronic lock....preferably around the mid michigan area...New or used is okay depending on condition.

+1 for Dunhams. Ive been pricing them lately. Gander, Bass Pro, Home Depot, Sams, local shops, online. Dunhams has had the best deals. Get an actual safe. Dont waste your money on one of the press metal ones. They are good for keeping the kids away from your guns or storing ammo, but it would take 10 seconds for a bad guy with a pry bar to open. Dunahams had a Sentry 14gun fire resistant rated one for $500. They had a Remington 22gun for $650/

I know Mike (owner) personally.  You won't be disappointed by shopping at Able Safe.  I bought my safe from him.

Another satisfied Able Safe customer here.

They had a very good selection of safes displayed in their store, and delivery was prompt.

Correct.

Able also has very reasonable delivery/set up costs and will deliver a surprising distance from their store.

Some Tractor Supply Co. stores also carry safes.  Don't know how the quality is, just another option.

Sturdy Gun Safe Co. treated me very well.  Some things to think about:

Almost all the big name safe companies (Liberty, Patriot, AmSec, Cannon, etc.) resell safes made in Utah by 1 or 2 actual manufacturers.

If you'll take function over form - take a look at Sturdy Safe Company. I just went through the same thing you did a year ago. 7 gauge steel body, 5/16" door, ceramic and glass fire proofing (others use drywall - no good). Used by a ton of LEA's for evidence and storage.

Things to consider:

Ratings: Residential Security Container - not acceptable in my opinion. Get a TL-15 or TL-30 rated safe.

Fire Proofing: Research this well - there is no 'standard' by which to measure the effectiveness. Every company has their own way of measuring. Look for Ceramic and Glass Wool.

Thickness: 10 and 12 gauge containers can be opened with an axe. Get something thicker - 3/16", 7 or 8 gauge. 30 gazillion lugs don't mean crap if you can pry it open either.

Bolt it to concrete with drop-in anchors, not wood.

Don't tell anyone that you have it. Try to hide it in your house.

If you have an alarm system, put a sensor inside the door.

Check out Able safe in Pinconning.  While you're there be sure to look at Summit brand safes.  The 3/16 inch steel body (upgrade on some models) is one of the best deals for the money if you're looking for a secure safe instead of a sheetmetal lined drywall box.  Google Summit Safes for more info.
