I have hunted with a handgun for years.  I like the big boomers.  This year I am hunting with the Smith & Wesson Performance Center.460 magnum.  An excellent handgun and very accurate, but it is large.  The hard part is finding a way of comfortably carrying it while walking or climbing into a deer stand.

My search brought me to www.pistolpackaging.com.  A local company that makes fine leather holsters for many types of handgun carry, but really has the slick ticket for larger hunting handguns.  I received the holster last week after ordering it just three days previous.  Quick service with a great product at a fair price.  I thought I would just spread the word.

I use a HS Precision Pro-Series 2000VP in 7mm/08. A laser gun. It has sling swivel studs and I put a short sling on it to carry it across the chest.

Thanks for the holster link.

I have never seen one of those pistols before.  Very nice.  Great caliber choice as well.

My dad is also using a S&W .460,  quite possibly the same model you have.  I think he is just fashioning a single point sling for carrying.

The Performance Center 460XVR comes from the factory with sling hardware installed and a black nylon sling. Does not protect the exterior of the gun, but gets the job done. Add a scope, and that holster will be pretty darn big.

I have a Burris 2.5-8x handgun scope on it.  Remington used to make the XP-100 which set this design pattern. There are also bolt action pistols with a rear grip but I prefer the mid-grip since it balances the weight out real nicely.

The .460 does come with a sling set up.  The thing I didn't like is the fact the weapon would "flop" around while moving much more than if it was contained in a holster.  The size of the weapon with the scope does call for a very large holster, but the design of this bandoleer setup makes for a very comfortable, secure, weapons carry.

I have handgun hunted, or at least brought a handgun with me, the last 4 years.

Here is what I have learned.

- Under 75 yards, 357mag, 44mag, 45LC...etc. are all about the same. Deer are just a dead.
- I hate carrying things on a belt...
- Handguns are best worn on the outside.
- In a tree stand, a handgun works GREAT for deer that creep up on  you and are sitting right below you.
- Don't be afraid to use your other arm as a rest. Your wearing so much clothing/padding, the muzzle blast just tickles.

I got my nylon bandolier holster from: http://www.cowboyneeds.com/pass_bandolier_holster.html
Nothing fancy but it carries my 44 on the outside of my clothing and keeps it handy and easily accessable.

I used to hunt with a S&W 629 Classic and a rig from Pistol Packaging...  Nice stuff but was not too fond of the "old west" styling...  I ended up with a cross draw, shoulder rig from Uncle Mikes.  Built for a scoped 6.5", it held the 629 with a PDP3 red dot nice and secure.  Easy carry when walking or climbing onto your stand.  And quick to draw as well!!

I see their western rigs (look very nice), but I use their Bandoleer holster.  Much like the Uncle Mikes but seems to carry the weight easier.  I have the Uncle Mikes bandoleer rig for my .500 S&W and it works but is much more uncomfortable than the Pistolpackaging rig even though the .460 has a longer barrel and has a scope.
