All-

I am in a bit of nerves right now.  I was firing a P22 pistol at the range a few weekends ago and the firing pin broke.  I called S&W/Walther and they said they would fix it for free and emailed me a label Monday morning.

Packaged up the gun (with the label they provided - it didn't say Walther/S&W or anything about a gun or firearm on it - package contents listed as "returned goods") and took it down to the customer service center in Laurel at about 11:00AM on Tuesday.  Mentioned it was a gun (I don't know if she heard me or not - no one else was around me) and she took the package and put it on the conveyor and said thanks.  Since it was pre-paid I just had to drop it off and notify them it was a handgun going in for repair.

Checked last night before I went to bed - no status updates.  It still said the billing information was received for the label, but nothing about the origin or any progress.

Checked a few times today and no change in tracking status.  It should have made it up to Springfiled, MA by 10:30 this morning. I called UPS (and checked with Walther at 4:30 PM)and told them the story.  UPS said the clerk should have locked it up, but they have no origination scan of the item.  The UPS supervisor called me back at 6:30 and said it was not found and he was referring me to the loss department.  The label was insured as well.

So, I am not that pressed about the money if this gun was lost or stolen.   Let's face it - a P22 is a cheap gun.  It doesn't even work and there were no accessories.  I am actually still holding out hope that they find it or it has or will be in customer services hands tomorrow.... stranger things have happened.

So my question is as follows:  What do I do if UPS never finds my package or someone stole it?  Do I go to the MSP with my pink copy of the handgun paperwork and talk to someone?  Does MD have a lost/stolen law within XXX number of hours (when is it considered stolen?)  Anyone been through this before?

I am still holding out hope, but am getting a little worried right now....

Chris.

Thats a good question.   I would not want the firearm registered to me.  Do you have any reciept of shipping it?  I would notify MSP so they can enter the gun into NCIC just in case it is found or is used in a crime and tracked back to you.

Nope.  The label was pre-paid. so I dropped it off at the actual UPS service center in Laurel directly to a clerk.  I am going to make another round of phone calls in the morning and hope for the best.  I guess after that, I will call the MSP and see what they say or what I should do.

Well, looks like it is fine.  A day behind, but at least it has been found!!!!  I assume they didn't scan it in Laurel but something else must have happened....

Sometimes those statuses update late (I've had some update after I received them).  Dunno what that deal was.

Glad everything worked out.

Always buy insurance when shipping anything expensive.

Walther's labels are insured for $300 for the firearm.  Again - money wasn't the issue.

I didn`t think UPS would ship a hang gun?, I thought you had to use USPS for hand guns, maybe UPS will only ship a handgun by next day air?

I think that UPS will use shipping with the Firearms if its going to them ...

to save the cost since i m pretty sure that lot of people are mailing guns all over and we dont realized it, but we dont want the big brothers to know that ..:)

next time - keep quiet about what's in the box
no reason to alert people that may want to take it.

I have shipped guns ups before, just put them a brown unmarked box and ship them, no problem
