I just turned 18 and wanted to purchase my first gun.  I have a few questions.  I know I can't purchase a handgun until I am 21, but there are no rifle ranges near me (I live in LA) and I am much more familiar with pistols.  If a parent purchases a handgun and then gives it to me as a gift, is it legal for me to possess it as long as I didn't purchase it because they are my parent?  This is what a guy I talked to at my local gun shop was telling me.

A parent may gift a handgun to a child who is 18 years of age or older.
