Okay, so when I moved out here to WA I only brought one pistol with me, because I wasn't sure of the states laws that I was traveling through and I already knew about IL laws and I was driving through Chicago, so I didn't want to get pulled over with all of my rifles / pistols in the car, so I only brought one and stuffed it in the bottom of a duffel bag underneath clothes and locked the duffel bag. But anyhow, so I left the rest of my stuff with my parents, in hopes that they could just send it to me.

Well long story short, my Dad talked to UPS today and they told him no way in hell they would let him ship my pistols to me even with the documentation that they are mine. So I'm left with two choices, not sure which one I should take:

A. Have my Dad ship them anyways w/o telling them they are pistols, and ship them next day air with signature delivery.

B. Have my Dad ship them to a gun shop out here, but I don't want to pay any fees because I've already registered the damn things once so I don't want to get double tapped and have to pay for transfers again.

Not sure what I should do but I'd like to get the rest of my firearms out here soon.

Any ideas / advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Andrew

You would have been fine, the Firearms Owners Protection Act (FOPA), covers traveling although NY & NJ have been known to get awfully bent about it.

You'll to ignore that this exists

(e) It shall be unlawful for any person knowingly to deliver or cause to be delivered to any common or contract carrier for transportation or shipment in interstate or foreign commerce, to persons other than licensed importers, licensed manufacturers, licensed dealers, or licensed collectors, any package or other container in which there is any firearm or ammunition without written notice to the carrier that such firearm or ammunition is being transported or shipped; except that any passenger who owns or legally possesses a firearm or ammunition being transported aboard any common or contract carrier for movement with the passenger in interstate or foreign commerce may deliver said firearm or ammunition into the custody of the pilot, captain, conductor or operator of such common or contract carrier for the duration of the trip without violating any of the provisions of this chapter. No common or contract carrier shall require or cause any label, tag, or other written notice to be placed on the outside of any package, luggage, or other container that such package, luggage, or other container contains a firearm.

and good luck filing a claim if something happens to that package.

I say book a cheap flight to see your parents and bring your property back with you.

Agreed.  Next time you visit, just rent a U-Haul or similar and bring them back with you.  So you are separated for a time, better than being separated by bars.

Well, I am flying home from the 21st to the 29th to take care of some Army stuff, but I really don't want to bring back with me an AR-15 / AR-10 and some pistols, all on a plane.

Ship the rifles to yourself USPS will handle them.

Bring the handguns back on the flight, it's not nearly the hassle you think it will be but you will need a lockable case.

This article will give you a good idea of what is involved, contact your specific airline for exact details.

if you still don't want to do that you can ship them back to yourself, you'll have to do it at a real UPS location, not a UPS Store, and you might have to argue with them a bit.

(B9) May a nonlicensee ship firearms interstate for his or her use in hunting or other lawful activity? [Back]

Yes. A person may ship a firearm to himself or herself in care of another person in the State where he or she intends to hunt or engage in any other lawful activity. The package should be addressed to the owner. Persons other than the owner should not open the package and take possession of the firearm.

(B10) May a person who is relocating out of State move firearms with other household goods? [Back]

Yes. A person who lawfully possesses a firearm may transport or ship the firearm interstate when changing his or her State of residence.

Certain NFA firearms must have prior approval from the Bureau of ATF before they may be moved interstate. The person must notify the mover that firearms are being transported. He or she should also check State and local laws where relocating to ensure that movement of firearms into the new State does not violate any State law or local ordinance.

Quit being a pussy and bring them back. Check them with your baggage and stop worrying about it. You are within your legal rights and thus should be able to bring them back. I am really trinh not to be rude, just bring them back your making it harder than it really is. Did you get pulled ove last time while driving? If you drive decently you wouldnt have to even deal with the police about it.

I have never flown with firearms, have you? I know all the hunting shows I watch they say it isn't easy and some airlines really don't like it. Especially hand guns.

I have...multiple times. Just declare them, make sure they are unloaded, and use a TSA approved lock (so they can check if they want).

They don't have to like it. If you let them know you have firearms in your "checked" baggage, they will slap a tag (or sticker) on it and you'll be on your way.

Yes, I have.  Even in the paranoia in Oct 2001.  It's not that bad.

Getnlwr is correct this time.

It's a good idea to keep a print out of the TSA guidelines regarding firearms.  I've come across some TSA people who didn't know the guidelines, although my TSA/firearms experiences have been much above expectations.
