Following from experience last year, I thought I'd try something a bit heavier than the 55gn DN stuff I was shooting which struggled in wind a bit at longer distances. Lyman #49 suggest an 'accuracy' load for 75Gn A-Max with 25.6Gn (from memory) of Varget (which is helpful since I have quite a bit of Varget). The obvious thing to do is try it and see, though I wondered whether my Bar-15 barrel might be a bit short @ 15-and-a-bit inches ? (N.B. I don't want to get too hung up on this and spend all my time developing loads... compared to what I've been shooting just a heavier bullet will be a good start - I'd like to find something and stick with it!) |

Quoted: Quoted: yes, sorry.. 1:8 I believe (Mark? - correct me if I'm wrong and you can remember). Yes but A-Max's are not mag length bullets. Try Sierra's 69 or 77gn offerings, Hornady's 75gn HPBTM or Berger's 73gn LTB OK that's good to have been told that before I bought some - thanks. I'll try some HPBTs |

Quoted: Apparently A-Max bullets are not allowed for Target Shooting in Devon and Cornwall as they are now deemed to be 'Expanding' so need to be entered on your FAC. so that'll be tungsten, steel core or solid copper only then?If anything its the other way around... I know that some people do use A-max for varminting (there is I am told a couple of thou in the jacket, makes no difference in practice so they say).. but Hornaday actually advise against it... I think the hint is 'A' for accuracy, 'V' for varmint? Arbritrary uninformed decision making at its best. Devon and Cornwall get D for dunce. Some time spent on the throne with Lymans this evening, I'm set for 69Gn Match kings and 24Gns of Varget I think; we'll see how we go from there.

True enough, found that out at Helston Gunsmiths a while ago Unfortunately Hornady have put on their website that the A-Max have "rapid, explosive expansion properties" then they go on to say "These bullets are not recommended for hunting medium and large game." So just hunting varmints for which they already have the V-Max. If they'd stopped with "Designed by match shooters for match shooters" which "delivers flat trajectories with excellent uniformity and concentricity" it would have been ok. I don't suppose they'll lose much sleep over the orders from the UK that won't now be happening. |
