Hows it hanging out there. Not sure if any of you will remember me, its been a while. Me and the wife have been wanting to relocate out there for a long time. We made a trip out there in March to the Portland surrounding areas and loved it but I havent been able to find work. And doing this from another state is a real bitch. So after a couple months with no luck we have decided to just pack up the family and move us out there. Stay in a hotel until I find a house for rent. Then after exploring for several months possibly buy a place. This is the only way I see doing this with the luck I have been having. I know it sounds crazy. What do you all think. Have any of you done something like this before with a wife and two kids. I an going to give my notice in two weeks at work so there no turning back. So I hope you have room for one more gun loving family who will help support the right to keep and bear arms in your state.
Oh ya,
We arent windsurfers either :) LOL

I do have a couple questions that I am sure I asked before but just want to make sure of a couple.

1. How long do you have to be a resident before you can apply for a CHL. Some places it 6 months, some as soon as you move to the state.
2. Is there a certain county I want to stay out of. Meaning a place thats harder to get your CHL.
3. Is washington county still the best place to live for NFA signoffs.
4. I do not have to contact the local police or state when bringing the AR's into the state right.
5. Handguns. I do have to notify or register these right. Sorry for not knowing, but I jusy havent had the internet time to search for the answers.
6. Anyone have and contacts for temp agencies that frind work for computer tech jobs or know anyone who is hiring.
7. I promissed the family I would buy them a dog. It must be a yellow male lab. Does anyone one have a source.

Right now it looks like we will be looking in washington county, hillsboro and the surrounding area for a rental.

Thanks for you time.

2. Is there a certain county I want to stay out of. Meaning a place thats harder to get your CHL. Oregon is "shall issue".  I don't think you will have a problem anywhere
3. Is washington county still the best place to live for NFA signoffs. dunno, I live in Multnomah.
4. I do not have to contact the local police or state when bringing the AR's into the state right. Correct
5. Handguns. I do have to notify or register these right. Sorry for not knowing, but I jusy havent had the internet time to search for the answers. Nope.  No registration of handguns anywhere.
6. Anyone have and contacts for temp agencies that frind work for computer tech jobs or know anyone who is hiring. Don't know.  Sorry.

right now it looks like we will be looking in hillsboro for a rental.

This may be your best option. Search through there, find a job you are interested, then contact the nearest Oregon Employment Department. They are in most major cities, as far as I know. After a quick registration, they will give you the name of the employer and who to call to schedule an appointment, Jobs range from temporary, to short term, to careers.

Good luck getting up and running in OR.

1. How long do you have to be a resident before you can apply for a CHL. Some places it 6 months, some as soon as you move to the state. I’ve been told by my sheriff that I have to live in my county for six months before I can apply for a concealed handgun license. Is this true?

Yes, this is true if your are a “legal resident alien.” Otherwise it’s another crock. Once again what we are facing are law enforcement agents who cannot read the law. Here’s what it says:

166.291 Issuance of concealed handgun license; application; fees; liability. (1) The sheriff of a county, upon a person’s application for an Oregon concealed handgun license, upon receipt of the appropriate fees and after compliance with the procedures set out in this section, shall issue the person a concealed handgun license if the person:

(a)(A) Is a citizen of the United States; or

(B) Is a legal resident alien who can document continuous residency in the county for at least six months and has declared in writing to the Immigration and Naturalization Service the intent to acquire citizenship status and can present proof of the written declaration to the sheriff at the time of application for the license;

Ok, that’s A and B. Two different things. Oddly when they first wrote this section they didn’t make that distinction. We complained and said this would be mistakenly applied to US Citizens. Typically, the “gun lobby” disagreed. Fortunately, the committee hearing the bill agreed with us and made it as clear as they could. But still these boneheads can’t get it right.
We have gotten Marion County to back down on this. We’ll go after the others one at a time.

3. Is washington county still the best place to live for NFA signoffs. It's my understanding that the current sherrif in Clackamas County is the friendliest of the 3 counties in the Portland area.
4. I do not have to contact the local police or state when bringing the AR's into the state right.
I'm going to to be moving from calif to oregon next year what do i need to know about bringing my guns into your state? what type of background checks does your state do?

There are NO background checks for guns you already own. You can bring any conventional gun into Oregon with no hassle and no paperwork. (If you own machine guns please contact us for more info.)

If you buy a gun from a federally licensed dealer, there will be the standard federal background check done through the police state police. The police state police will keep a record of your purchase as long as they can. Oregon law says they can keep the info for 5 years. (If you think they'll destroy the info after 5 years we have bridge we'd like to sell you.)

If you buy a gun at a gun show, the geniuses who vote in Oregon have decided that you must also pass a background check even if you are buying from a private collector. Of course, nothing prevents you from finding a gun you want to buy from a collector at a gun show and making the actual purchase across the street at McDonalds. Oregon gun laws were written by and for idiots.

Welcome to our state.

5. Handguns. I do have to notify or register these right. Sorry for not knowing, but I jusy havent had the internet time to search for the answers. Same answer as above
6. Anyone have and contacts for temp agencies that frind work for computer tech jobs or know anyone who is hiring. I work in construction, no clue about the computer industry but there are members here who would know.
7. I promissed the family I would buy them a dog. It must be a yellow male lab. Does anyone one have a source. Best bet is to check out the local papers, once you find a place to live

Right now it looks like we will be looking in washington county, hillsboro and the surrounding area for a rental. I hope you find work in the same part of town because if you have to travel across town meaning from the Westside to Eastside of the Metro area, the commute can be a bitch and take longer than it would to travel from a remote location south of Portland.

Thanks for you time.

Hey man well lots of luck to you on the move.  You are taking a risk but IMHO I think the job market is pretty good in OR right now.  You should be able to find a house/apt for rent fairly easily.

Also on the job front: I once had to get a job in one state while living in another.  Inevitably I found that prospective employers just told me to contact them when I got into town.  That's probably what you'll find too.  So my point is, don't get too worked up if you don't get much love when calling employers while you're still in CA.  Just get here and pound the pavement, you'll find something.

As for the dog, look for a Lab rescue -- that's where we got our dog from (not a Lab, but there are rescues for all breeds these days).  I just Googled "labrador rescue Oregon" and got this link:

http://www.oregonlabrescue.org/index.html

How's that for service?

And/or check out the local pound/shelter.

When will we see you at PR?

Just a note on Washington County NFA sign-offs -- they are very friendly and I have had only good experiences.  You do have to make an appointment in advance, but they sign when you come in and you leave with your F4.
