Just moved here from the Houston Texas area and I'll be living in Princeton WI for at least a year. I left TX where the lows were in the 70s and the highs mid 90s and get here and the highs are in the 70s. |

You can open carry right away. Need to be a resident (30 days I think) for a permit, but chances are your CC from Texas will be good until then. Be sure to explore the awesomeness that is Mills Fleet Farm when you get the chance. Don't try to keep up while drinking, or engage in any drinking contests.
On the other hand, we have some pretty awesome craft breweries. |
| Hey!! Fellow Texan moving to WI.... WOOOO HOOOO!!!! I was born and raised there and now I am here (still a Texan at heart but THANK GOD I'm here now). Welcome to the wonderful land of beer, brats and cheese. And of course many other things but those are three of my favorites. |
|
As mentioned, open carry is legal, no permit needed. HOWEVER....make sure you read up on the laws. Open carry in a vehicle is above the windowline. Without a permit, you also need to worry about school zones.
Getting the permit is easy. You can use your TX permit to get the WI permit. |

Welcome.
If you aren't used to snow driving, be careful and remember to break EXTREMELY early when coming to a stop. If you own a truck, put some weight in the back or you could fishtail. Winter really isn't that cold, just layer properly. Fish frys are every Friday. I'm sure you can find one. OC is fine, CC you have to wait. If you like to fish, ice fishing is surprisingly fun. |

Quoted: Like the nosey neighbors we are..... moreinfo on teh bike. Oh, and have you driven in snow before? Have you dealt with 10 degree days? Have they got roundabouts in TX? Bike is a 1100cc Honda Shadow with mustang seat and loud pipes. I've driven in snow and ice in Tulsa and up here on visits. Coldest I've ever been is a visit here to my grandma's at -11 Roundabout just about threw me for a loop. They'll take some getting used to. I've not developed a NFL allegiance yet. |

Quoted: that is correct and you have to watch out for the magical 1000' from a school as well. Quoted: Quoted: Need to find a place to get some fresh curds to mark those off my list. So I can't carry a gun in the car without a license unless its above the window line? that is correct and you have to watch out for the magical 1000' from a school as well. |

Is that the Federal law or state law as well? Quoted:

No, the window line thing is only for open carry W/O CCL. There is some debate that it only needs to be in "plain view", such as on your car seat. A court case that would have resolved this didn't go to trail.
With a CCL, carry anyway you please, stay off the school property. As I mentioned earlier, look for a WCI free class. They have lots of info on details you'll want to know. |

What statute says the gun has to be above the window line? WI v Wallis "A handgun on the seat of a car that was indiscernible from ordinary observation by a person outside, and within the immediate vicinity, of the vehicle was hidden from view for purposes of determining whether the gun was a concealed weapon under this section. State v. Walls, 190 Wis. 2d 65, 526 N.W.2d 765 (Ct. App. 1994)." See also: "A defendant was properly convicted under this section for driving a vehicle with a gun locked in a glove compartment. State v. Fry, 131 Wis. 2d 153, 388 N.W.2d 565 (1986). " |

What statute says the gun has to be above the window line? The court precedent in Walls above is how 941.23 is applied & enforced. To the OP, the good news is, a WI CCL only takes a week to 10 days (at present) to get processed, and the price has been lowered to $40 for 5 years. WI issues CCLs to residents only, so you need to take care of that (getting WI drivers license, etc) ASAP. If you currently have, or have EVER had, a CCL from another State, that's a training qualifier. So is Hunter's Safety from all 50 States, so is a DD214 from the military. http://www.doj.state.wi.us/dles/cib/conceal-carry/concealed-carry |

Princeton is a great town. My family has a cabin in Montello.
Mecan River Outfitters is a great place for dinner along with Kathy and Mike's on Puckaway Lake. There is also an antique store/garden store that has a really good cafe in the front. Plus don't forget about the good old Princeton Flea Market! The fried cheese curds at The Hitching Post in Manchester used to be great but I haven't been there in years. |

On the other hand, we have some pretty awesome craft breweries.
