This is going to be a long post as I lay out my wish list and ask you to suggest a town or location to fit it.

I grew up in Texas and Tyler is my current residence. But I currently work overseas over 10 months a year. I’ll be retiring in 2014. By then, I’ll be 60 and my wife will be 39. Our twin daughters will be 6 by then. My wife was a Dentist in the Philippines, but in the U.S., without going back to school, she will only be qualified to be a Dental Assistant.

We’d like to be near someplace with a sizable Filipino population, like Houston and also close enough to a large city where my wife might be able to work in Dentistry through a medical temp agency, instead of permanent employment, so we can have greater freedom to travel.

Could be maybe out from the city in a 45 mile or so radius (within commuter distance). Want to be in a highly rated school district for the girls.
Needs to be somewhere its legal to use an airgun in your own yard – suburb outside incorporated city limits? Somewhere with both an indoor range and an outdoor range within reasonable driving distance. A skeet range would be a really nice plus too.

I don’t want a lot of acreage to deal with, but would like a large lot (1/4 to 1/2 acre)
Due to family ties, I’d like to be no more than 2-3 hours from Houston and 3-4 hours from Tyler.

Hobbies:
Airguns – rifles, pistols, even a CO2 Crosman shotgun with trap and reusable targets for backyard skeet
Cowboy Action (SASS) Shooting – Use to be a member of the Texas Regulators SASS club in NW Houston
Black Powder Cartridge Rifle Silhouette – use to compete at Yaupen Creek range near Columbus
Casual target shooting – rifles & pistols – when young I competed in IPSC and High Power Rifle (NMC) in the late 70’s and early 80’s
Skeet (much more so than trap)
Hunting upland birds and deer
Fishing for pan fish – especially with ultralight spinning rod & reel
Want to learn to fly fish
Motorcycles

Please suggest possible towns or locations that fit as much of my wish list as possible

I have absolutely no idea where to retire, but way to go on the young wife!

Hmm...  Well, discounting your ethnic requirements I would say New Braunfels / San Antonio / Fredricksburg area.

I have no idea about the Philippino thing.

I would guess that there's a fairly large Philippino community in San Antonio.  Not enough to be a measurable portion of the population, but several thousand at least.  Pretty much anywhere there is a military base and it's warm, you'll find a reasonable number of asian wives.

My wife is Thai, and we were delightfully surprised to find a community of about 1000 Thai families in Austin, most of whom were transplanted here at various times as the spouses of service members stationed at Bergstrom Air Force base.  There were enough families that they actually set up a Thai temple with resident Thai monks...

Those options are a little farther from Tyler, and even Houston than I wanted but that is a nice part of the state and good deer hunting. Any of those towns allow airgun shooting in your own back yard? I'm sure San Antonio is large enough to have an indoor range. How about the smaller cities mentioned, like Federicksburg and New Braunfels?

Anybody know anything about the smaller cities nearer Houston or Tyler, like Conroe, Spring, Katy, or Rosenburg? Someone mentioned Sugarland.
