I have a question, will a 300 blackout shell go in enough for the firing pin to be activated.... I thought with the different diameters from .223 to 300 the BCG would not be able to go far enough forward for the gun to fire. The reason I ask is that my wife grabbed the wrong mag and loaded 300 blackout into my piston AR and it exploded. Any help would be appreciated.

Short answer, no.

I think you answered your own question.

Ok then how in the world did that happen....It shouldnt have even cycled right?

Short answer is yes.

The .300 Blackout can chamber and fire in a .223/5.56mm rifle (due to the bullet being pushed back into the casing when chambered) with bad results - as you have found out.

Hope your wife wasn't hurt.

Hopefully all are safe.

I don't think that will be covered under the warranty.

Thank you for your concern, she got a little shrapnel in her arm and powder burn but she's a trooper. I even had the mags labeled, just a small lapse in judgement on her part. Everybodys ok except the gun, and that one i had the most $ into Adams Arms Piston system, hardcore lower, Evo rail all ruined.

Damn. That looks rough!

Doesn't look like the Evo rail was damaged though, and actually the lower looks ok..

More damage pics!

Eta- glad everyone is ok!

Damn thanks for the post.  Good reminder to make sure we are vigilant to keep our stuff segregated.  I didn't even know it would be possible for a 300BLK to chamber far enough to go off...now I know.  Thanks man.

Agreed, I bet lots of that can be saved, might need a new barrel, definitely an upper receiver.

I've color coded and labeled my .300AAC, .22lr and 5.56 to prevent this very thing. FDE is .300AAC, OD green is .22lr and Black  is 5.56.  All mags and uppers labeled with caliber. Best method I could think of to idiot (me) proof everything. Glad no one was seriously injured. Typing this has made me think I might change the color code, as Black would make sense for .300 AAC Blackout, wouldn't it?

I don't know - it's kind of like your brothers motorcycle engine now. Easier to inspect the inside.

Sorry about your luck OP. Glad it's just the gun that's got permanent damage, and not your wife.

My father once managed to load a 1911 mag with 45 and 9 mm at the same time. Ran the whole mag through a 45 1911.. No damage, but still.

Always pay attention!

That's one of the big negatives about 300 BO for me...too easy to have a mix up since the mags and cases are the same size.

Nice looking rifle prior to it blowing up.  It's a pretty cool cutaway tool now though.  Does it still function?

I stand corrected. Forgot about the short case length.

5.56 owners need to be very careful if there are .300 mags laying around.

Ouch. I'm glad everybody is okay.

Now you know - when you take the rifle off the bench, put the ammunition away. There are several caliber combinations that can do that.

I'm sorry about your rifle - it sounded like it was a good rig.

You see that gold looking powder around the bolt? That's the 300 case turning into dust from the pressure!!! Wow... This is a learning moment for everyone here and on the Internet. Let this be a lesson to everyone. Be careful!!!

That little red dot in the barrel is the lead and it was only 1.25 inches from end. IT ALMOST MADE IT THROUGH! I was surprised it went that far.

I found out the barrel is a loss too...take a look at the broken tooth!http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/582326_10200267649077562_1831164112_n.jpg

Have you tried to buff it out?   WOW F$%$ÃŽG WOW!!!!   Seriously, I am glad everyone is fine metal can be replaced. That just made my decision for my next build it will not be a 300. It looks like a nice alternative to the 223 but having both around just too many possibilities. I think I will just look for a 308 instead.

That is the most outstanding customer service I have ever seen. Next time I am in Ocala, I plan to make a purchase. My dad needs a new rifle. The 20" A2 I gave him is getting too heavy for him in his old age. I have 4 spikes FLHTF lowers that I am building and was going to give him one of those after completion. That kind of customer service needs to be rewarded.

That is a cool lower, I hope it wasnt damaged but the upper damage near the pivot pin looks like there is a good chance that it absorbed a lot of energy and was dimensionally altered .

+1, I use FDE for my 300BLK & black for my 5.56NATO. Both rifles and mags are fully dressed out in these colors, but even with them like this I still have to do a double/triple check.
