So, just last weekend I was in the Illinois forum asking about where I could live that would allow me to be a free citizen because my wife was potentially taking a job in Chicago. Now, she is being offered a job in New York. I am assuming that New York City is the biggest pain to live in regarding fire arms but I was wondering if anyone had any good tips on where to live in order to be able to keep as much of my stuff as possible and to be able to have shooting options reasonably close. I have Ar's, high cap mags, handguns and shotguns. I did some research and I see that the city requires permits to buy and possess any type of firearm but that you can get a conceal carry (I am assuming that the song and dance for concealed carry is ridiculous).
If there is a suburb where we can own a home and have republican neighbors that would be ideal but I know that is probably asking a lot. |

You're wanting to move somewhere upstate then, because the island and the city are, for the most part, a lost cause in those aspects... |
| The nearest semi-progun county would be Putnam on the East side of the Hudson and Ulster or Sullivan on the west side of the Hudson River. There are trains that run into NYC from both sides of the Hudson but it depends on where in Manhattan your wife's job is located. If near Midtown the commute from the east side of the Hudson is easiest. If Downtown you can get there easier from the west side. If you want the most 2nd amendment freedoms PA is your best choice within commuting distance of the City but it is a long commute. |

Do people really commute that far? Yeah people commute that far. A few things you will have to worry about... NY has an AWB that mirrors the old federal AWB. All AR or AK style rifles that are post-ban (made after sept. 14th 1994) must be neutered...No flash hider or threads on barrel (permanently pinned or welded muzzle brake), NO telescoping stock (must be pinned permanently as well), and No bayo lug. Mags over 10 rounds need to be PRE-BAN as well. And the biggest problem I foresee for you is HANDGUNS...ALL your handguns need to be kept OUTSIDE NY until you get your NY pistol permit...if you don't have a NY pistol permit, you can not even POSESS a handgun in NY. Not in your home, car, property...nowhere. Once you get it, you will have to ship every handgun into NY through an FFL for a transfer of each weapon (for a fee). A NY permit usually takes around 5 months to a year to get. The good thing is that most counties in NY issue your pistol permit as a full carry permit. You can carry in bars, churches, stadiums, parks, banks, almost everywhere but NYC, schools, or courts/federal properties. Oh and no class III fun stuff either. If you are going to live in NYC, you can't posess ANY guns at all anywhere whatsoever, until you get your NYC rifle/shotgun permit, and NYC handgun permit...which takes 3 months to 6 months respectively. And you can only bring in 1 Gun every 3 months. NYC sucks when it comes to guns. OH and NYC has its own AWB...no AR or AK type weapons and a huge list of other guns not allowed, nothing over 5 rounds no matter if it's preban or not (17 rounds for handguns). Don't move to NYC if you want to keep 95% of your guns. It's not that bad if you have lived in NY all your life and your gun collection has grown with the laws, but moving into NY with an aresnal SUCKS. But NYC is a great city...I work there very often and love it...except the gun laws. Good luck... |

Unless the job offer comes with a substantial salary, Id say dont bother.
Unless you have a combined income well in excess of $100K you will find it very difficult to live anywhere near NYC. Taxes alone will kill you if you plan on buying a home, never mind your guns, you will have to sell them all to buy a home, and maintain it. Im paying $12K per yr on the dump I live in. Another $6K per yr on my weekend home !!!! |

Everything's in NYC costs at least 2x what it does everywhere else. NY property taxes are high, plus you have to pay income tax to NYC if you work there |

Olives purchased at the olive bar are taxable. Buy them off the shelf and they are non-taxable. My county charges sales tax on home heating oil like it's a friggin' luxury to heat your house. http://www.tax.state.ny.us/pdf/publications/sales/pub750_208.pdf |

Just so I am clear, NY wants me to give my guns to someone else to hold for me until I get their ignorant permits. WOW. That sounds like a great way to operate. I hate liberal states. Everything is so bass ackwards that it cost twice as much to live there because there are so many people keeping track of nuisance laws. I looked at housing in a bunch of the cities outside of the city and you have to spend $500,000 to $600,000 to get anything close to what we have and our house isn't quite worth $300,000. So I will have to go $300,000 in debt, pay much higher property and state taxes, probably bump into a different federal tax bracket and I will have to neuter all of my toys because some spineless liberal is scared of things that go boom. She will have to make $100,000 more than she makes now for any of this to be worth it and I don't foresee that happening. Just for the sake of being thorough, does anyone know anything about New Jersey? There is an office in Berkeley that she could try to work out of if that would make my life any better. |

| This is all wonderful news (Sarcasm is hard to relay via message boards). I don't understand how you all do it. My wife better be getting a TON of money if we make this change and even then it probably won't be worth it. If the the world is reasonable I will be able to stay in KS and keep my guns, my home, my low cost of living and my republican friends! |

What they meant was, this job BETTER be paying at least $100k MORE than anything she is making now - otherwise it will not be worth it. Also, if you have never lived or worked in a very dense metropolitan area before...it does something to the psyche. The valuation on that is...un-measurable. /ml2150 |

All that being said, you and your wife might enjoy working there. Don't let politics, hobbies, or finances get in the way of your dreams; life's too short. Nothing says you have to stay there forever. To be honost, I don't like New York City. To me, it is just another city that is extrememly over priced. We were there a few months back and my favorite part was the republican protest in Columbus Circle where they were telling all of the News Media that they needed to report what was actually happening in policitics instead of being in Obama's pocket. Besides, politics, hobbies and finances are a BIG part of my life. A lot bigger part of my life than any city could ever be other than my hometown so all of those things have to be considered. Quality of life is king. |

I guess your wife is the bread winner ? It's takes a lot of money to get ahead in NY...a lot of money !! That's why a lot of us are leaving with our pensions, me included.
To me, the worse thing about NY is not the gun laws, it's the taxes. Taxes will sink you and they're going for more. I spend $6k a year in public school tax alone !! |

I have an insurance business and commercial real estate business that I can operate from anywhere. the biggest reason for the move is that my wife is very driven and she will be bored if she stays in the position that she is in. Since I am flexible we go where she needs to go. However, I am not willing to move somewhere if it costs me money. |

I suggest that you discuss the potential negative income tax implications as a NY based business with a CPA or tax attorney familiar with NYS business/personal taxes. I'm pretty sure that will put the final nail in the coffin in your decison to move to NYS. |

I'd say 200K combined will let you live comfortably. |

Your wife will likely not want to drive into the city every day so both areas offer a short commute to a local train station. I live in orange county and my house is around 500k and we are paying over 10k a year in taxes alone. Owning a house here is insanely expensive just to keep up with. You can get an alright place for 300k if you are willing to downsize. Either way your taxes will be very high. PM me if you want anymore info. |

Lots of promising info. Thanks for the help everyone. |
