Hello Gentlemen

I am relocating from the People's Republic of New York (New York City to be exact)  SO you can imagine the hell I am in.  I am moving to the Arlington - Alexanderia Area.  I was hoping the AR15.com guys in Va could recommend some places for me to go:

1st - I need a good gun shop as I plan to buy as many ar15's as I can.  I have been forced to buy Prebans and that has gotten crazy. My wife says that I own to many as it is but what does she know, you can never have to many.

2nd - I also need an outdoor shooting range.

3rd - And last but not least I need some info on how to obntain permission for an SBR.

Also  If anyone can give me any info on how to set up an NFA Trust I would appreciate it

Thanks for the advice, the AR15 crew always comes through for me

Welcome to VA!

1st - I need a good gun shop as I plan to buy as many ar15's as I can.  I have been forced to buy Prebans and that has gotten crazy. My wife says that I own to many as it is but what does she know, you can never have to many.

I would check out VA Arms in Manassas, and Mid - February there will be one of the largest gunshows in Chantilly (~15 miles from Arlington up 66)

2nd - I also need an outdoor shooting range.

See other threads about IWLA, I think that the Cove in Winchester and Gilberts Clark Brothers in Warrenton (both Fair drives from Arl/Alex) but open to the public.

3rd - And last but not least I need some info on how to obtain permission for an SBR.

Pick what you want to get, fill out the ATF forms, get Chief LEO (CLEO) to sign off, submit fingerprints, photos, and fees, and ATF should get you what you need for tax stamps.

If I recall, there maybe issues with getting CLEO sign-offs in Alexandria, but out of my AAR.  Recommend that you look at a trust for NFA items.

Hope this helps!

I'm in at home in VA right now, but I heard ARs are rather scarce.  You might want to check out VA Arms in Manassas, and Grayghost Tactical in Culpepper, a little bit of a drive but those are the only 2 gunstores I've shopped at recently, but I reccommend them both HIGHLY.

I used to live in Vienna, the NRA range is nice, but its indoors.  Clarks Brothers and Blue Ridge, are in the area too, but I've never shot there.  That Silver Eagle Place out in Loudon opened up recently too although ARF has said some negative things about them.

I don't know if the CLEO in Alexandria would sign off on the NFA paperwork, but thats in the Hometown forum somewhere, otherwise you might want to look into setting up a trust.

Hopefully someone with some more info will be a long shortly, I haven't been around in about a year, so my info may be rather dated.  Oh and Congrats on moving out of NY.

Military?  Do you have to live in Arlington?  If you can move out a bit further you may be happier with your move to VA.  Except for our brothers in ARFcom, NOVA is considered occupied territory.

No matter what, you will find VA much more acceptable than NY.  The taxes alone have to be about 1/2 of what you are used to paying.  Good luck!

I can help with the gun shop! Actually he is an FFL. He will transfer anything for you. I usually just ask him to find a price for what I want. He always comes in at very good prices. Usually cheaper than I can find anywhere. If he gets it for you there is no transfer fee, just tax. He got me an RRA lower straight from RRA in 3 weeks for $302 including tax.

His name is Grant Pinto. I will PM you his info.

Your top income tax rate will drop from about 6.85% to 5.75% here.
Your sales tax rate will drop to 5% statewide in VA (4% state + 1% local everywhere).  I know in NY your sales tax rates are as high as 9% in some jurisdictions (4% state + steep local taxes).

Welcome to the Commonwealth of Virginia!

Your new VA DL will need to be thirty days old before you can buy guns with it. Then it will take you up to 45 days to get your CHP. (You can open carry from the minute you get here, no permit needed.... imagine that!). CHP's are shall issue, none of the references and interview BS here. Even if you don't carry, the CHP gets you exempt from the "one handgun a month" limit.

Oh yeah.... and join VCDL.

Get a copy of "The Virginia Gun Owner's Guide."

All Virginia lethal force law is common law.

The book has the applicable cases and discussion.

+1 on Grant. He's a good guy. Charges $35 for transfers but is a stand up guy - always answer the phone when you need him is quick on emails and will work with you to get your transfer done when and how you need. Plus, he is a nice, knowledgeable guy that will talk guns with you for a long time if he's not busy. Oh yeah, OP welcome to NoVa.

I got some really awesome info.  Thanks.  Right after I Join the Virginia Citizens Defense League. My Next Order of Business is an NFA Trust.  Can anyone give me any guidance on where to begin with that.

Thanks
