Hey all!

Unfortunately I had to miss the build party this last weekend so I could shoot at Bambi. Nor did I have my parts. Anyhow, I recently purchased a used YHM 12" FF rail. My upper currently has a carbine legnth FF tube on it. And yes, it fits over my gas block! (hooray!)

I'd like to install the new FF rail and put the FF tube onto my unmodified 6.8SPC upper.

I have neither the tools, nor the experience with the AR platform to feel confident doing it myself (hard to swallow, but I'm not messing this one up!) I'm not 21 or I'd offer you a 6-pack for your time, but I can certainly pay for the pizza. I'm located in Ames, but can travel within an hour or so.

Thanks in advance,

Sam

If you plan on installing a vertical fore grip or bipod you will want the anti-rotation screws.   Otherwise the jam nut should should hold it just fine as long as the nut is properly installed.

The anti-rotation screws are available from YHM.   Part #YHM-9434 at $1.80 ea.   Don't know if Brownells carries them or not.

I plan on installing BOTH actually. haha.

May as well pick up some other YHM parts I'd like to have... you know...to justify the shipping

After looking at the forearm, it has ONE of the anti-rotation screws. Will be picking up the second one.

What would the screws look like. Are they just regular Socket Head Cap Screws? If so, I can supply some for nothing. Just need to know if they are Socket Head, Button Head or Flat Head Cap Screws or if they are set screws, and the thread pitch. I live just North of Ames.

When you get all your parts together let me know.  I should be able to help you out with the install.

Go to their web site and take a look at them.  I've never seen them used on anything else.

Found the screw on their websight. I could make it if I had a sample. I think I would replace it with a SHCS instead. You wouldn't have to worry about messing up the screwdriver slot plus you would get a little more torque using a hex wrench and the SHCS, in my opinion, look nicer.

whiteing,

I sincerely appreciate the offer. I'd hate to take your time in making a screw.
Once they come in, I'll def be looking for help on the install. Once again, all the help is greatly appreciated.

Everybody STAY WARM!

Acer,
This is funny....I just finished almost the same swap.

It was my first time and it really wasn't all that hard as I already had the armours tool.  The only issue I had was I have no "action" block to hold the upper receiver while I tried to remove a stubborn barrel nut.  I used a scrap of thick leather and a careful application of the vice and all is well.  Check out the tacked posts in the build-it section here for step-by-step details.

Aviator:

Good advice for sure. I just don't have the vice, action block, nor armorer's tool. I'd like to make sure I have BRD before becoming vested in the tools of the trade.

Not to mention the $50 in tools alone is a decent expenditure for my measly public service job here at school.

P.S. Whiteing, E-mail sent! Turns out I really don't need anything from YHM!

Get those fore ends installed yet?

No sir.

Sent an e-mail to whiteing, patiently waiting for a response. Although, I think one of the screws should be enough to hold it in place. It would have the break the screw for it to rotate. Anything that could bust that screw would probably bust two of them! I figure it can always be added later.

YHM wants $1.80 for the screw... and $6.50 to ship it!

I'll send you an e-mail here in a bit, strongarm. Is your offer still good? If so, I might just take you up on it. I'd like to get up and running here!

Thanks again all,

Sam

Haven't received the email yet, I did send you an IM though.

Just checked my profile settings and my emails and IMs were turned off. They are back on now.

$6.50 to ship a screw?  That's insane!  We'll work on that.

E mail inbound.

Odd. never got it. But I just fired one off your way. Rear brakes went out on my truck today (More money deducted from fun funds). But I can hitch a ride from a buddy. Repair job starts at 8am once I get a good fire going in the shop!

Good to hear.  I've been up here the past 4.5 years.  Working on a grad degree now.  I'll likely be leaving after this semester though.

Just wanted to give a big thanks to Strongarm. Not only did he have an impressive array of tools and knowledge, but he was kind enough to lend me a sweet varminit barrel for my upcoming coyote hunt in the even that my new FSB doesn't come to fruition in time.

Thanks again!

P.S. I'm almost convinced to buy a new barrel. My old barrel is a colt 1/7 16" with a custom brake on there. Going to sell my 6.8SPC upper and buy a new barrel, pref. 1/8
