Unless you paid for a gun before 1/15 (or whatever the date), you can't buy an AR anymore, right? This applies to out-of-state purchases as well, right? I'm in South Carolina and would love to pick something up if I still can. Even just a lower that I can build. Thanks for any help.

You're pretty much boned on an AR until someone finds a work-around stock/pistol grip that is acceptably safe and lowers start moving through the dealers.

Question: What were you thinking and why?  If you have a residence in SC you could buy a lower there to later build into a compliant gun whatever that turns out to be or you could buy a full AR to keep down there...

Unfortunately I'm only down here a week, or so, per year. I'm not a resident, but they're happy to take my income taxes for any money that I make from down here. I guess I'll have to wait to see how this plays out in the courts. (Though I won't be holding my breath.) Thanks for the info.

You have a vacation home or...?

If you own a home there, you qualify as a dual resident and can buy everything legally there.  What can and cannot be brought into NY and when will be decided by the courts in a few years.

Just an office/factory. I usually stay in a hotel. With housing the way it is, though, maybe I should buy a double-wide and a plot of land just to keep guns in. (And still stay in a hotel.)

You CAN still buy a lower, or even an AR and bring it home. You have until NEXT April 15th to either neuter it, register it, or leave it as a lower forever.

You CANNOT buy an AR and possess it in NY now.   They are currently classified as "assault weapons".  You can't buy one in-state and no FFL is able to transfer one in from out of state.

Stripped lowers *should be* good to go in NY if you can find one in stock, and also find an FFL willing to transfer it.

You definitely can't buy an AR that has any of the named features.  If you bought the lower after 1/14/13 you can only build it into a ban complaint featureless AR...but I expect that FFLs will probably start transferring lowers sometime again...
