So err.. Yeah.

Only 17 so no fun stuff yet,
Reading for a while..
Registered now because I want to try go shooting when I go to France next month.
Not sure on legalities etc.. Or if there are any ranges with rentals / instructors etc near where I will be going.
Given that my french is pathetic, I figure my best bet is here..

Also wondering if anyone knows anything about the gun clubs in Morley / Leeds ?

Welcome to the board....

By my reckoning, you're about 60 miles from Diggle, cracking range up there and about 100 from Altcar....

Some of the local will be about to point you in the right direction...

ETA:  Why not stick a question up in the Europe forum [tout ] ..... Specify the region / area you are going and see if you get a response...

You do not need to speaka the French to shoot in the UK.
Just abide by the rules and jump through the hoops and you are good to go.

Young shooters like yourself are always needed and wanted. For some reason most FAC owners I meet/know are all over 30. It can be hard to introduce new shooters without it looking like you are trying to recruit gun totting nutters....my club is very small and there is minimal publicity that we even exist in the local area even though we have an Olympic pistol shooter as a member.

I'm almost 40( shooting since 16)  but when I joined my local shooting club ( returning to shooting after a few years abstinance after my pistols were banned/siezed) with a friend about the same age we reduced the clubs average age down quite a few notches... and we converted a few old charcoal burners to AR15's....4 out of 50members in our club now

Get down to your local club and enquire about joining them make the required comitment and you should be able to enjoy shooting to your hearts content.

Good luck
Cheers
Taffy

ETA Your age is not a disadvantage...If you showed up at my local club (very small) but you had a comitment and maturity then you would be treated as an adult but due supervision would be necessary to insure your competence and safety and the safety of others.

I'm 19 and have had my FAC since August 2005 so get on it and get applying.

Seriously it isnt any harder to jump through the hoops age 17 than it is age 30.

As regards time and cost. It shouldnt take much time or cash to get into shooting in the UK. The biggest time taken would be having to go through probationary membership. I never did this so I cant say but looking at the NRA's website it can entail a lengthy and costly course (YMMV)
Range fees at Bisley are a bit steep extortionate if you shoot on your own but if you are with a club they are much much lower.

Good luck

Fixed it.

I dont know how they keep a straight face while they ring it up. I wouldnt mind but half the time I go there's noone there. Ah well.
On that note, are there any decent fullbore ranges in Hampshire. That are cheap(er)

£10 per hour for an electronic target is 'steep'

Welcome to our corner of ARFCOM !!

I think it would be  easier to find a club in the UK first, go along and see whats what.
By all means try and find a club in France on your hols, but if you don't speak French and havnt shot much before....I must admit I don't know the legal ins and outs of French Firearms laws etc.

As far as cost goes, it depends on the type of shooting you want to do, your budget, where you want to do it and how often ? Like most sports, you can spend as much or as little as you want.

Most clubs have club guns that you can use whilst you gain experience during the probationary period. Contact your local gun shop and ask them if they have a list of local clubs if  all else fails.

Good luck and let us know how you get on !

Cheers

The members on here are right - you won't have a problem getting an FAC at 17 as long as you are a suitable person.

I have been shooting since i was 7, and got my FAC (with 5 guns on, including Section 1 shotty) on my 14th birthday, which is AS EARLY as leagally possible.

If any of you make it to my neighborhood, I'll let you warm a few barrels.

BTW, each of my children fired their first shot at the age of three.  My 15yo is in the process of making an AK.

I to was shooting at 7, fired my first fullbore (enfield no 4) aged 11 Father, ex police had me shooting his L1A1 aged 14. Got my FAC aged 17 (now 37) My club in Cheshire is a private club (only allowed 50 members ((2 vacants i think))) but we are licenced by the Home office, it is an ex Home guard range, we have a calibre limit and a muzzle velocity limit (I think its 3800 fps) so we are well covered although only 100 meters we meet every sat and membership is £50.00 per year inc annual St Huberts lunch every october at the Crewe Arms Hotel. We are affiliated to the NRA and use Altcar (we pay as we use) so there is lots out there to be had. Its not the cheapest 'Hobby' to be had, but when you start you wont want to stop. I have probably accounted for about 25000 rds of ammo through my personal collection over 20 years (and more during military time in TA) so if you count what i have spent i could have a nice new car but i am happy with my per 306, and i am sure there are people reading this who have spent alot more than me, I have no doubt about that.

I had my 12 year old son shooting my AR on private land at targets with a back stop for the first time only last weekend and it wont be the last !!

Sorry to go on abit but I am just passionate about my sport
