If you mean two legged hogs, I'm sure Ndenway can give you some good advice.
Hogs seem to be seasonal in some areas, moving in and out. Talk to the local game warden if he is amicable enough to help you out. You never know.
I've got some places to hog hunt but I'm a bit laid up right now. Also, I don't like killing something and not eating it., coyotes being the exception. Hogs this time of year taste bitter from eating acorns.
And I've been told to shoot every one I can put a bullet into.
You just have to find some rancher that has lost wheat acreage to a hog herd.

twister, one of these days (when I'm a bit stronger), I'll take you out on one of my hog hunting places in western OK. I'm wanting to kill some coyotes too.

Wow thanks for the invite I kinda missed this years huntingseason because of health issues,I heard a somewhat reliable story about a 400+ Hawg taken on the creek a few miles north of my place.

Well, I can't promise you any 400 lb hogs or huge critters, but we may see a shit load of turkeys if not hogs.

We might even get several more guys here to participate. I believe the rancher really wants those hogs thinned out. We can form hunter/killer teams and put them around the 3000 acres.
But I'm going to be very picky who I take.

I've been taking either a .357 or a .44 mag revolver when we go fishing.

Seems the feral hogs like to use this particular fishing spot as a watering hole.

I shot an enormous tusker a couple years ago! Came right to water, and I happened to have my 686 .357 handy. Probably a bit large an animal for the caliber, but the pig didn't seem to think so!

wow sounds good Dan, I currantly working on a guy who wants his varmint problems thinned out,he got so overrun with Hawgs he and his buddys ran out of ammo over the weekend, sound like BS to me till I drove by the area and nearly hit 3 just driving by the creek,O and hes got a couple of bigger critters too

twister, I'm fairly laid up right now. Probably another three months before I can shoulder a centerfire rifle bigger than a 223. Maybe even eight months.
I'm planning on taking a Mini14 or an AR. Not exactly my first choice but recoil will be mild on a split sternum that is healing up.
I'd like to have something bigger in case we do come across the bigger critters.

Heck dan....a .22 would work just fine if you hit them in the eye!  I wouldn't push it by trying something bigger than that for quite a while if I wer you!!!!

Try Southeast Oklahoma......If you are not looking for monster pigs...... Bennington, Durant, Bochita and some of the surrounding towns have tons of eaters.  They range from 60 to 200 lbs.  Just ask around at the local coffee shops.  Most farmers will invite you in heart beat if you promise not to shoot their cattle, deer or turkeys.

That's true. I've heard of some good hog hunting - killed one myself a few years ago - near McCurtain in Haskell County.
It's open land, used for logging. Finding the hogs is gonna be rough though unless someone can put you on them.

I took a nice little scouting trip up to Oologah lake today,NADA,NOTHING,ELZIPO didn`t see a single sign, where I was told early this week to look, more like a housing edition up there now. But I was informed by my buddy that they are getting thick in cherokee county,FYI.

I was told a lot of homes are vacant around Oolagah. People buy an acerage, build a home, then try selling and/or move off. Been a while since I was up there.
Most every place I have to hunt is west of I-35. Matt, my son, went up this afternoon to check some cameras we have set out looking for hogs.
If we have some, I'll post them.

Because so many land owners are loathe to allow hunters on their property, it is getting out of control.
They are up and down the Cimarron River now, from Kingfisher to east of I 35.
I didn't think I would ever see that.
I've heard the farmers gripe about the wheat being torn up but they don't want anyone hunting over their ground.

I am moving to Enid in late July.  Any good hog hunting areas around there?

I have been hunting near Texoma and saw a lot of sign, but no hogs.  The Texas side of the lake has a lot hogs from what I hear.

Look west of Enid at some of the small towns. You might get lucky. Like I said, many ranchers/farmers are reluctant to let "city boys" hunt over their dirt. You almost have to be related to hunt on some people's property. There are some hogs up around Seiling that I know of.
I may be going to Binger tomorrow to check out a hog hunting place. I'm going to take some game cameras and set up. The only reason I am invited is because of my cameras and past experience.
The gal that owns the property had a hog hit in front of her house by a semi. It crawled off and she heard it squealing. The other hogs ate it.....
She wants them gone.

i think i'm  going to try to find a really cheap feeder and put it on public land by the arkansas. we'll see how that goes and how long it would stay before it walks off.

Posi, don't do that. It will walk off in short order, even if you chain it down. Your best bet is to set up some type of salt lick, mineral block etc.
My son buried one in a spot on our place. It is now a mud hole from the critters tearing up the ground.
It's not as good as corn, but it's cheaper and will increase your odds somewhat.

I'd be up for hunting some hogs.  I'm not much for killing and leaving lay, but if that was what is expected then I'd do it.

good idea dan, i can pack a mineral block back in the woods without trouble in one trip and not leave drag marks.

1/22/2009 5:27:43 AM EDT
[#34]
one thing I used to do was pack a big ziplock full of corn and a cheap can of beer dig a hole and put corn in pour the beer on top and cover it up,come back in a few days and see the damage, that will tell you if you have hawgs.
yea dan I agree, I never thought to ever see hawgs no the neosho or even points further north,I know a guy who hunts them west of skiatook now.

posi, Matt my son got some rock looking mineral block and buried it  (covered with dirt) and they tore the ground up something fierce around the block.  Now a regular old mineral block from the coop or tractor supply is going to be a lot cheaper. We've had a regular mineral block in one spot for several years, kept dropping one in the same place, and they still tear the ground up on that place.

beak - these aren't necessarily game animals as more than agricultural pests. They are worse than a pack of feral dogs in some ways.
If the farmer wants them all killed, kill 'em.
I did find a good friend that makes barbque out of the meat that is supposedly fantastic. He's a truck driver that does it on the side. His brother is the one that is taking me to Binger.
He swears he can make an acorn eating hog taste delicious.

Dan,

I understand what you are saying.  If I was going to eat one, I'd only be interested in a small one.  I wouldn't have a problem just going out and killing them and leaving them lay.  I'd welcome the opportunity to just go out and kill them for the sake of killing them.

one thing about eatin them is that males over 100lbs tend to be quite bitter or even badmeat,WHY? because they haven`t been castrated,so I tend to just let them lay and rot, much too much trouble to bury them unless you have a vehicle to drag them off,I eaten females up to 300 and they tasted fine, but you got to butcher them ASAP,get the meat on ice asap, one of the guys I used to hunt with, just took the backstraps and rump right there, tossed them in a big ziplock and tossed them in the backpack.

The only hogs I ever shot was in October or November. Shot some real stinkers too.
The best one we had to eat that I shot was around 80 lbs. Hickory smoke and beer made that the best pork I ever had.
I'll remember that about the big old sows, twister. Them big tuskers will just get shot and tusks taken out for conversation.
I've been told the best time for quality meat is in April, when fresh greens start popping up.
That is kind of when I'm planning to do this if all works out.
No trip to Binger. Too damn warm to traipse about the woods and set cameras up.
Maybe tomorrow.
