What ever happened to the asshat that said the Houston Crew wasn't multicultural enough?

A discussion was had amoungst the Houston crew as to what constituted authentic Chinese food.  SC-Texas thought Beef and brocolli. General Tso's Chicken and Sweet and Sour Chicken was authentic.

Cpt_Yellowtide, Timinator and others disabused me of that notion.

We met one Saturday at a chinese resturant in Chinatown and ate Dim Son:

The expedition vehicles to culinary authenticity

Lots of FOOD.  Perfect for a southern boy

Cpt_Yellowtide and Timinator scheming to feed me something that I won't recognize

HK940 eats something, but does he knoiw what he ate?

Timinator telling us that we are gonna like this next dish

SC-Texas, being hungry, didn't have a problem using chopsticks!

Was there Kim Chee to be had?

Once you get past the smell, not too bad....

Next time I'm in town on a Tuesday, I'm going to go for a North side meeting a new place.

Close to Wolfies, about 4 block East, called El Real Mexican Restaurant.

They serve amazing TexMex and at a cheap price. They even have quail and empanadas on the menu. Their fajita beef rivals anyone's in town and they have a large smoking section for the crew.

That way we can hit the Mez'cun culture.

Yes.  Anything tastes good if you wsh it down with enough diet coke.

Actually, the traditional dishes were pretty damned good.  Just nothing like anythijng that I had ever had before.

COZ_45, have you tried La Tapatia Taqueria at Stuebner Airline and 1960?  It is one of my regular lunch places.  Good food and dirt cheap.  You can get three tacos, rice, beans, chips, salsa and a drink for about $6 at lunchtime.

I think I'll go there today.

Yep...but, you must go to El Real.  It opened about 3 yrs. ago.  Walters and FM1960. No one went there. We tried it and frequent it to the tune of about 3 times a week. It now is very crowded on Friday and Saturday evenings and does good business nightly.

I'd put their Fajita beef, empanadas, guacamole and El Real margaritas up against most anyone's in town.

They have only one fault...they don't have a 45 - 60 yr. old illegal lady making homemade tortillas...which is a damn shame...

Just got back.  I am stuffed.   Now I have to sit through a damn meeting without gassing anyone.  Oops.

SC-Texas, they have a location at 801 Congress.  Give it a try for lunch.

SC-Texas,

When you're really hungry and not good w/ sticks, just poke the meat through with em.  Kinda like "chop skewers".

Can any of the H-Crew help me out here: The kind I get at restaurants are all/mostly round, like a pen.  However, my sifu [wing chun / yong chun] gave me a couple rolls of chopsticks for bone-hardening exercises when I first started with him a few years ago.  They are mostly squared.

Now my question: Why the difference?  Different foods or main dishes?  Regional differences?  None of the above?

Thanks in advance,

Jake.

Jake, they might just be from different regions. I have seen both types even in the same restaurants. The use really doesnt change once you are used to the method.

The dfw crew was multi-cultural before multi-cultural was cool.  We got Mexiacan Dr.s.  Heck even one of our honorary members is a damnyankee (texrdneck).  We got us a Korean (LordTrader , who, even though he moved to La, is still a DFW crew guy).

Plus we have two certified pink pistols members. (Ilikelegs and TheRedgoat)

Let us never forget that we also have a "Hun"

Thanks a lot, Timanator.  One thing I've learned is that regionalities and/or dialectical differences can make quite a...... well, difference.

A coworker is from [ETA: can't ever remember exactly where she's from], and natively speaks Hokkien, but she can go back and forth pretty well.  Being at the center of the university, we deal with a lot more Asian families (mostly Chinese) than we would elsewhere (the university - very cosmopolitan; the city - not so).

She is at home speaking with most, but admits that sometimes she has a difficult time.  Sometimes she can bullshit, sometimes not!

Once things slow down there a bit, she's supposed to start tutoring me in reading, writing, and speaking.  We'll see how well that goes.

Yes Kim Chee is Korean.

However, at Kim Son, which is considered a Vietnamese restaurant in Houston, you'll get Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese food and I've even seen Singapore-style noodle soup there...

I love Americanized Chinese food....as a rule

Wow.  Talk about one-stop-shopping!

Now if we could just get a steak house to also sell guns........

Or am I too late on that great idea, too?  Is it called the "Coz Homestead"?  I'm sure TexRdnec would also say I am too late - he runs one called the "Tex Compound - er, Homestead" down in South Texas.

We have that here in Dallas.  Outdoor world.  One stop shopping and eating.  Bullets, guns, and steak, all without having to go outside.  Big bucks brewary steakhouse is a short walk from the gun counter.

Last three times I've been to the greater DFW metro area:

1) Denton, to attend UNT

2) HEB area, for a wedding

3) Lake Dallas, to stay at ex-roommate's parent's house

Didn't get to do anything fun, like, say........ go to Outdoor World.  Will make it a priority next time I'm in the area.
