A little while back I posted that my wife and I are being relocated to Houston for her job.  Well we'll be flying out February 10 - 17 on her companies dime and need some good place to eat for dinner.  Looking specifically for Seafood, Steak, Mexican and pretty much whatever else you guys think we should try.  Money really isn't too much of a concern since her company will be paying for it.  Thanks.

Perrys steakhouse is pretty good. There are several in the houston area. Heres a link to all of them. Hopefully you can find one close to where you will be staying.

Seafood.... Goode Company Seafood, Pesce  ***Sushi***Kubo's in Rice Village
Mexican.... La Tapatia

Houston has some really great Thai and Vietnamese resturaunts as well as from around the world. You need to check out Fogo its not cheap, but its great and go very hungry and stay two hours.

Yeah, where are you staying and whre will you be looking to live?

I like Pappadeaux for cajun seafood. They are a chain with several locations. Pesce or La Griglia if you're inside the loop.  For cheap oysters and fried seafood, Cap'n Bennys on S. Main.

There's Smith and Wollensky or Mortons or Sullivans for high dollar steaks.  Frankly, I prefer Saltgrass but I'm cheap.

Lots of good Mex, from cheap Tauqaria's to Ninfa's or Pappasitos.

Also, lots of great Thai/Viet/chinese and sushi places too.

Just let us know where you will be staying.

Fogo De Chao....Very pricy but worth it.  Skip the salad bar.

+1 for Perry's for a steakhouse.   Their porkchops are the tops.
For Mexican, I prefer Escalante's or Guadalajara.
For Italian, go to Luigi's on the Strand in Galveston or Cafe Europa near Rice Village.
There are plenty or Thai, Vietnamese, Japanese or Chinese places.

The trick to Fogo is do lunch its cheaper. And drink water or iced tea. That salad bar rocks! I would hit it before I eat any of the family style side dishes they bring to the table thats what loads you up. And they really gouge you on soda's, beer , mixed drinks and dessert.

Perry's is a great steakhouse, but don't eat steak there.

Eat the 7 crown or 7 finger pork chop deal.

I mean to tell you, it's fricking awesome!

Seafood - Pappas or Pappadeaux is good. Tony Mandola's on West Grey is awesome, Goode Company Seafood on Kirby and 59 and I-10 feeder near Gessner is great.

Mexican - Pappasitos is trendy and pretty good, but, Los Cucos is great. However, obscure places are the best: El Real on Walters and FM1960 West is real Mexican food as it La Mexicana on Montrose.....

Steak - Northside - Stonegate on FM1960 near Champions.

Ok, I"m done

Just curious, job have anything to do with space program??????  Mexican food - Papacito's........sea food - Topwater Grill in San Leon, not fancy, but great sea food, lots of places to eat and spend money on the Kemah boardwalk, but they are very busy on the weekends, and some are VERY expensive.  I work at Johnson Space Center.

Most of the good ones have already been mentioned, but the Palm for reasonably-priced steaks (almost Galleria-area), any Saltgrass is good, stay away from Ruth's Chris, SanFran Steakhouse as I've never had good luck at either.  Smith & Wolensky's is the MOST frickin' over-priced CRAP I've ever put in my mouth, excluding some hookers.

I don't know what sort of BBQ you're used to in VA, but Demeris is good... ghetto, but good food (several locations) Just stay away from locations near the Astrodome.  A must-try is Pappa's BBQ!!! Stay away from Luthers.  Oh! ETA: Baker's on Voss north of Westheimer...OMG...

Michaelangelo's near Montrose for Italian, or Arcodoro near the Galleria, Star pizza (very casual, good pizza, cheap) near Montrose, Maggiano's on Post Oak near the Galleria, Romano's Maccaroni Grill is good but Olive-Gardeny, Napoli is a decent inexpensive (cafe) meal, Mia Bella's downtown.

PF Chang (call for a reservation) is good but a chain.  My favorite local asian restaurants are Co-Po-Lo in Chinatown off Belaire (too authentic for some), Feng Ling near Westheimer & Voss (W Galleria), and New Yang for delivery on about 9000 block of Richmond (W Houston).

On Mexican food, ??? I moved here from the lower Rio Grande Valley ON the border and can't really reccomend anything that might be what people eat further south, or you might just not want to eat it.   If you want Tex-Mex, some of the best fajitas I ever had were at the Cadillac bar northwest of downtown off I-10.  Molina's off Buffalo Speedway is OK, Doneraki on Westheimer west of the Galleria is OK, Fajita Flats on Fondren south of Westheimer (good food) IS GREAT FUN if you tell the staff it's your S/O's birthday!!!LOL!!!LOFR!!!  you'll see...

One of my favorites is a really good Spanish Tapas restaurant, Mi Luna off West University

For Sunday brunch, go to Vargo's (Woodlake area near the Galleria) or BirraPorreti's in River Oaks, or Mi Luna in West U, and a couple places in Montrose (be warned, Montrose is our "weird people quarantine area")

LOTS of good food in Houston, Vietnamese (good cheap VC restaurant is Vietnam Coast on Hillcroft just south of Westheimer, Mediterranian at Fadi's at Westheimer & Dunvale, Ethiopian (never had the balls to try it (US aid rice & beatles? ..j/k) but they are on Richmond near Fondren.

We aren't America's fattest city for nothing

Just wanted to say thanks for all of the information guys.

We are really looking forward to this move.  Housing is much less expensive in Houston than it is in Northern Virginia.  We'll be getting twice the house for half the money we spent up here.

Welcome to the Clear Lake area (note, it really isn't clear!!!), PSC is a great range, although no full auto and no fifty cal. permitted, for safety/survival reasons. The area around here is really growing fast so there is a real fear of a stray shot outside the range shutting it down.  You will also need to think about a hurricane kit.

I'll throw out some of my favorite's.

Seafood - McCormick and Schmick, Post Oak at 610. A chain, but still damn good. Also try Bayou City Seafood and Pasta on Richmond just inside 610.

Mexican - I second the Los Cucos recommendation from Coz_45. The stuffed avocado there is one of my wife's favorites. They have several locations, so without knowing where you'll be I can't advise more. It's hard to find a bad Tex-Mex place in Houston. If they really do suck, they go out of business.

Steak - The Strip House, downtown. Decor might be offensive to some (think burlesque pin-ups) but the food is very well done. You get a wide variety of stuff at Fogo de Chao. Skip the rabbit food and the other BS and concentrate on the meat.

Artista is fabulous food, but it's located in the Hobby Center. Place is a madhouse on show nights, but on non-show nights it's empty. Try the crawfish taquito's if you go.

Other places to try include Rainbow Lodge (game), Plc, and Mark's (New American). Tafia is good for drinks, but the food bores the crap out of me. It gets good reviews, but I don't know why. Bland is the word of the day. Gravitas is noisy as hell, but the food's still good.

Big Oil, huh? Reading between the lines, I'm guessing ExxonMobil?

Rouge on Westheimer just east of Montrose.

Sushi - Osaka (same location)

thai - Thai Gourmet on richmond and unity food can be spicy so be careful what u tell the waitress when she asks how much.  the satay is really good as are all the curry dishes. They know my name and favorite dishes. Best thai food I've tried yet, and I've gone to most of them

Thai Siam on highway 6 and w. airport(?) gets honorable mention here too

italian - leonardos on 59 and williams trace in sugarland (best italian Ive ever had at a restaurant bar none) their cheesecake is really excellent and sometimes I make the drive just for that.

saltgrass is a good place to try for steak under $30 a plate. kirbys in north houston is well loved by everyone up there but I've never tried it. lots of good steaks in this town

Los Cucos is good for tex mex. I haven't found a really good mexican food restaurant here as I've been spoiled by the west coast taquerias. my grandmother was mexican so I'm kind of picky about this, they have to be able to cook better than me and I haven't seen it yet.

Manenas is argentine deli food on westheimer and wilcrest. very good authentic empanadas and desserts. they make gnocci every 29th of the month.

good BBQ places are plentiful, try them all and see which one you like
