Hello everyone in the carolinas.

I live in North Carolina and I filed my concealed handgun application today. I know it can take up to 90 days but who got theirs back before then, and how long did it take?

Jeremy From Lumberton.

It took mine about 3 weeks. I had given my prints and had a full background check done before to work at Charlotte Douglas, so that may have sped up the process a bit.

when I renewed in Jan. of last year, the deputy told me that it was taking about six weeks for the fingerprint check to come back to them. Don't know if that still applies, but that seems to be the delay on permits

Mine was approved in about 30 days but no one called to tell me.  I didn't want to call to check on it since I was told not to do so when I filled out the app so after about 100 days, I finally called.  They wondered why I hadn't been down to pick it up.........

Put my application in on the 21st and got the call today that it's ready to pick up.

Too bad I'm here in Texas, waiting to hear if I'm deploying or not.

Oh, well...  It's a four day weekend, so huzzah.

God bless!

4 months - Currituck County....

Excuse was that, "Once we send it off to Raleigh, it's out of our hands"....

"So, are you sure it didn't get lost or misplaced somewhere? The guys in Dare County (next county south) get theirs in 30 days."

"No, it getting lost couldn't happen".....

After I talked to the "Colonel" (old timer) at the local gun range he said, if your past military it can usually take quite awhile longer.

So I don't know...

But I finally got it...

I don't know if it is worth it to you to fight with them over it but here is the wording of the legislation, note under item a.

§ 14‑415.15.  Issuance or denial of permit.

(a)       Except as permitted under subsection (b) of this section, within 90 days after receipt of the items listed in G.S. 14‑415.13 from an applicant, the sheriff shall either issue or deny the permit. The sheriff may conduct any investigation necessary to determine the qualification or competency of the person applying for the permit, including record checks.

(b)       Upon presentment to the sheriff of the items required under G.S. 14‑415.13 (a)(1), (2), and (3), the sheriff may issue a temporary permit for a period not to exceed 90 days to a person who the sheriff reasonably believes is in an emergency situation that may constitute a risk of safety to the person, the person's family or property. The applicant may submit proof of a protective order issued under G.S. 50B‑3 for the protection of the applicant as evidence of an emergency situation. The temporary permit may not be renewed and may be revoked by the sheriff without a hearing.

(c)       A person's application for a permit shall be denied only if the applicant fails to qualify under the criteria listed in this Article. If the sheriff denies the application for a permit, the sheriff shall, within 90 days, notify the applicant in writing, stating the grounds for denial. An applicant may appeal the denial, revocation, or nonrenewal of a permit by petitioning a district court judge of the district in which the application was filed. The determination by the court, on appeal, shall be upon the facts, the law, and the reasonableness of the sheriff's refusal. The determination by the court shall be final. (1995, c. 398, s. 1; 2005‑343, s. 1.)

The excuse that I got was that the "Permit had to be printed in Raleigh and sent to the sheriffs office."  I guess that "someone" took a vacation week of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years.   Guess the old saying that the wheels of government move very slowly.  All that I know is that when the time comes up for renewal, I will apply 6 months before the permit expires to avoid delays like this.

My Permit was supposedly "Approved in Raleigh" on 1-16.  Still haven't heard anything.  I'm calling again this morning.  Surry County won't even let you apply for a renewal unless you're 90 days or less from expiration.  Mine expires Wednesday.

Called and it was there.  It is now in my wallet.  Nice of them to call and let me know it was ready.

Huh, that is why I am going to get mine in Pitt County(once I get my license changed, I've been going to school here for 4 years) instead of Currituck, where I am from.  Too many hoops to jump through, even with just getting a handgun purchase permit.  Oh well

No, what I am saying is they are required to issue the permit in 90 days, if it isn't ready yet they are required to give you a temp until the normal one is ready unless they are going to deny you. Now is it worth trying to make them do this? Probably not, but that is the way the law is written.
