Howdy, Texan ARFcommers.
I just moved down to College Station to start grad school at A&M. It's a lot warmer here than it was in Oregon (Go Beavers!). I've read through the Important Links, browsed through a couple of pages of Texas threads, but I still have some questions that could use answers. First of all, how many others are here in College Station? Where do you go shoot rifles? So far all I've found is Champion. Better than nothing, but shooting .223 at a short indoor range is hard to justify when it's so expensive (and I don't think you can shoot centerfire rifle there). Second, I've got a Utah Permit good in this state. I've seen signs posted saying "No Unlicensed Firearms" (Fuddruckers), "No Firearms With or Without a Permit" (a bar/resteraunt in Northgate), and "No Firearms" (local parks). The first two are easy enough to figure out, but what about the third? In Oregon, a sign that said "No Firearms" really meant "No Firearms (unless you have a CHL)". Is that true here also? I know obvious do's and don'ts, but want to clear up the ones I'm not sure about. Third, it looks like state law is no firearms on university campuses, so I've been leaving it at home. In Oregon, State Law was that it was fine, but University policy was no firearms on campus. Therefore, if you were approached by security or a police officer, they could politely ask you to leave and you would comply or be trespassing. Here, it looks like a big no-no. Is that correct? I figured to err on the side of caution (plus, it's really hot here. My full size doesn't vanish like it does under the jacket you wear from September to May in Oregon! As soon as I switch to a Texas Drivers License, I'll go buy something smaller.) Fourth, is there any USPSA/IPSC, IDPA, Practical Rifle, etc. around College Station? I've shot USPSA and Practical Rifle, and I have some friends that used to shoot IDPA-I'd love to participate in any or all of them. Finally, I'll keep watching for group activities. I've been to some awesome events with the Oregon ARFcom folks, and I'd love to meet some of the locals. I've been working on acclimating to the locals...it's hard to beat the local BBQ, and have acquired a taste for Shiner Bock and Ziegenbock. Thanks everyone! Don |

1st, Welcome to Texas.
Your best bet for shooting is to make friends with someone who has land close by. Hog hunting is fun too. The "no firearms" signs do NOT apply to you as a CHL holder. Look for signs with the 30.06 verbage in them. Those are the absolute line for concealed carry. http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/administration/crime_records/chl/signposting.htm A PDF copy of the relevant statues and laws they hand out in the CHL class. http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/ftp/forms/LS-16.pdf ETA: Beware if you're transferring your residency here. It may invalidate your Ohio permit and you'll be in non-compliance. There is no grace period for getting or renewing your TX CHL. The good news is they seem to have the wait times way way down now. |

For USPSA and the occasional 3-gun match there is Brazosland Pistoleros just outside of Bryan. There is a match schedule on their web page.
For monthly IDPA and 3-gun matches there is The Impact Zone range which is south of Hempstead about an hour from College Station. WHIDPA is the name of the club that hosts these matches, IDPA on the 1st Saturday, every Wednesday night, and 3-gun matches every 2nd Saturday of the month. At the same range on October 17th will be the Comp-Tac Charity 3 Gun Match. |

Go to the industry forums and try contacting the Champion Firearms Rep = BadSVT
He should be very familiar with the other ranges in the area. I am pretty sure that there is a range up highway six heading towards Hearne. Arrowhead. It also looks like there is also a range near Snook. google search for ranges Have you went to Freebirds yet? I received my undergrad and masters from A&M, so if you ever have any questions about the University, such as why Aggies do some of the stuff we do or anything else, feel free to ask. What degree are you pursuing? |

Working on a Masters in Nuke...I'll probably be here for a PhD also.
Yup, I've been to Freebirds, which was amazing, and Dixie Chicken and Fitzwillian (or something), and a couple of other places around town. I love College Station. The only question I can't seem to figure out is why the President is coming here next month, of all places. Seems like there'd be...friendlier campuses up in the North East. |
| Howdy, from a fellow Aggie. I am still working on my undergrad, but college station is one of my favorite places to be. Northgate can be pretty fun on the weekends. I too am looking for a place to compete at. You can also check out Gunsmoke Shooting Range. Take HWY 60 (University St. inside of city limits) towards Snook. Right after you cross the Brazos there will be a sign on your left. Take a left at that sign and follow the road to the range. |
