I live in WNY and want to take my son (13) for his hunters safety course. Does anyone know of where they are teaching the course? I checked the DEC website and LaSalle was the only place listed. I live in Lockport and he lives in Buffalo so there would be a problem picking him up during the week and hauling him over to LaSalle. Hopefully there is something on the weekends.
Thanks in advance, Mike |

This is just about the worst time of year to be looking for a class. You have to take it in the summer, generally well before deer season. No one is going to offer it right now, but they will refresh the list and there will be a few offered in Erie county. Good luck. |

You have to remember that the sportsmen education course is run by VOLUNTEERS, not by paid DEC staff, other than regional coordinators, there is very little support from DEC>
The only compensation we get as instructors is the Conservationist magazine for free. That being said I suggest you contact the local rod and gun club or the boyscouts in your area, you may have an instructor among those groups. Also I don't know if you're aware that you can do the course online and show up to the next course that has the hands-on training (live fire) and get your son's certificate that way. |

Do you have a Gander Mountain near you? They have classes that aren't posted on the DEC site.
Might be worth a phone call, but more than likely too late for this year. I've also seen courses at gun clubs like GCL and others. If you can get a hold of an instructor, they might be able to point you in the right direction. |

yep, as stated, the courses are 99% run by volunteers and they're likely sitting in a blind right now. They've already donated their time and I don't blame them for giving up their own hunting time.
By state policy the courses are supposed to be listed with conservation department. Call the department regional office in your area and inquire. That said, there are instructors who drop the ball on having their course publicly listed. (They're required to be open to the public, free of costs, announced publicly). -you might also see flyers for courses at your local gunshop/sporting goods shops, and town halls where they sell licenses. |
