Coming to hunt in Iowa in early Nov, ranch I am hunting qualifies as a preserve. I typically hunt centerfire with an AR10, are there any restrictions in IA?

Assuming you are speaking of deer hunting, generally speaking, you cannot use a centerfire rifle.
In a January season in the lower two tiers of counties they can be used for antlerless but I believe only by residents. So, as a non-resident, you are SOL. However, the hunting preserve status MAY change things; I don't know. I looked at the 2013-2014 hunting regulations and don't see anything about it. Your best bet is to contact the place you will be hunting and ask them. Where are you coming from? 2013-2014 Iowa Hunting Regulations |

I know that in some states, preserves can pretty much set whatever they want for their own rules because they raise the animals for that purpose and on their property so...
I had never had anyone ask when I was selling hunting licenses and never thought to think of it before, so your question got me curious and so I looked. I have heard that there are places in Iowa where you can hunt pheasant year-round because you buy the birds they raise, but do not know about deer. Let us know what you find out. Greg |

We have one out in Idaho...or at least that's what we call it to fit in with the locals. We were told that 80 acres is too big to be called a lot, parcel or acreage so since we don't farm our mountains with a crop then a ranch it is. We also call it our property as well from time to time. |
It's ok, anytime I want to get that Iowegian warm fuzzy feeling I'll just go over to the in-laws "real" farm. I' m jealous of anyone here in Iowa that has a few acres (especially if it's wooded) as all of our properties are in 3 States that are all around 1,000 miles away which makes them much harder to enjoy as often, my wife hasn't been to all of them in Arizona, only been to the Florida acreage when we bought it on our honeymoon and to Idaho twice...which is the same number of times our daughter has been there. So whatever you call your land back here just get out and enjoy it for the reasons why you bought it...while you still have your health and are able to. |

So then, it's similar to a "farm"? Huh......I guess I never made the connection. From dictionary.com: noun 1. an establishment maintained for raising livestock under range conditions. I would have trouble calling 2k acres of wild whitetails a "deer farm". |

True preserve deer hunts, I'm not sure. However there are a few people who raise deer and I've been told you can buy a buck from them for several thousand and shoot it. No thanks. If I want to shoot livestock I'll slip my father in law's neighbor $800 or so, shoot a cow and have a whole lot more meat. |

Father in law has enough land to deer hunt, and there's a 170 class buck that's been dodging everybody for at least 4 years(that's when I spotted him). A few "lesser" bucks and plenty of supper sized does too. |
