Yeah, with limited info on where you will be, I can't be too specific. Northern NM has been getting a decent amount of rain lately. Your tag should be either a bull tag or a cow tag.
Since you are not sure which exact area you will be hunting I am going to assume you are buying a landowner tag. You will need to check to see if your tag is "ranch only" or is Unit Wide. If ranch only, then you can only hunt on a particular ranch. Whether that ranch actually has elk on it or not during your hunt will depend on a lot of factors. If it is a unit wide tag, you can hunt any public land or private land that you have obtained permission from the landowner to access and hunt. Assuming Abiquiu area means at least one of the units adjoining Abiquiu lake, I will assume it is a tag for either 5B, 6C, 51A or 51B. As far as numbers of elk are concerned, I would say 51B has the most elk, followed by 6C, with 5B and 51A being a toss up. Probably more elk on 5B as it has a larger huntable area. If you get more details on where you are going, let me know. Should not have too much trouble getting a cow in late October. |
