Howdy folks, Hoping for some suggestions. My brother is looking to move to the Huntsville area. My wife and I will probably head that way in a year or two, or get a winter place there. We are both veterans and retired police officers that value a low crime area and secluded/remote type properties. At least where neighbors won’t be crowding us. We like shooting and a little fishing. That’s about it for what we’re looking for. Hopefully in a good conservative area. Any you folks know of any concerns with the Huntsville area for what we’re looking for? Thanks for your guidance and suggestions! |
| Hiya...we are looking to relocate to Huntsville this summer...the People's Republic of Virginia has gotten completely out of hand- I went to post this morning and saw your note. I have looked at shooting clubs and ranges and Huntsville looks really good...would like to hear from folks there now about any local gunsmith, favorite ranges, etc...FWIW, we are looking at houses in Madison...Retired Navy, and thinking weather will be better in Huntsville than Fairfax VA. v/r W |
LOL. Polar opposite requests.  Madison is big suburbs and lotsa traffic vs. secluded and not being crowded. I relocated to HSV from the Columbia SC area last spring. I was living in "a Madison" in SC, e.g. the Irmo/Chapin suburban area in a high density subdivision. One of the "wants" in northern AL was storage for a travel trailer on the property. My wife and I dumb-luck stumbled into a new house with a RV garage in a lower-density, rural HOA subdivision. We're out near the TN border with a Hazel Green address. My wife and I started visiting northern AL in our travel trailer going back to 2022. We'd looked for houses and property between Florence and Scottsboro. We ended up north of Huntsville to be a bit more reasonably close to our adult son. The older properties we looked at were going to take more time and money than we had because it took a while for our house in SC to sell last year. Central SC had more and less expensive outdoor ranges with 200 yds out to 600+ yds. So far, I've been shooting on private land in AL and at one indoor range. I don't claim to have sniffed out all the public and private range options in northern AL. The house we got in AL was a downsize. I'm still working thru setting up my gun stuff. I'll chime in with others as this thread evolves. Happy hunting. |

| Good luck with the search. I looked at some places up there before moving down to the bottom of the state. Look on Landwatch as well as the other usual places . There is a WMA range near Madison. |

| Y'all- good insights thanks! My better half is better off in the burbs...our herd of basset hounds are used to that also. Beyond a safe 2A environment, our youngest works at Northrop Grumman in H'ville- and we need places to swim year round- that looks very easy in Huntsville. We have been there a couple of times, but are doing a specific house hunting trip in late February. Thanks! |

I moved from VA to northern AL / Huntsville area a couple years ago. Once you start looking at particular areas, research the traffic patterns for your typical commutes. Traffic is not terrible like in many places, but there are some choke points during commute times. I avoided Madison. Hit me up via IM with any questions. |

Having a Brother and the Wife a Cousin over in Decatur, we've looked a few times...Huntsville is a pretty big place, impressed me how many Corporations were represented there, and along with the "money" comes traffic and it's outfall. Once you cross the AL/TN line, things change and settle quite a bit, becoming possibly too rural: as we proceeded North, seems like most every place was closed up out of Business, maybe not now, that was ten years ago. South and East of Hvll is/was experiencing quite a bit of growth...whole place reminds me of Central Florida/Orlando as it was expanding and everyone was moving there...couldn't pay me now. DO like "Larry's Pawn & Gun" (both locations) and have spent quite a bucks in there. Public Range was a bit rough as people WILL abuse anything that's free. Takes about two hours to drive down to Anniston (CMP) and their World Class Range in Talladega. Red Stone Arsenal is a nice facility: at the time I was a government employee, and would have taken a position there to ride out the end of my career, but it wasn't to be. As I write this, we are actively searching searching the East side of I-65 and West of I-81 and even looking at the Farm Country of Ohio...We have got to get the fuck out of New York! |
