I shoot out here on OSU's Pistol team, and our .22 season is wrapping up.  We have a bunch of the gear to shoot IPSC, so we went out and got trained Saturday to see what it was all about, out at the Albany Rifle and Pistol Range.  Now, the team couldn't officially go, because we are a .22 Rimfire team, but a group of friends that all happened to be OSU Pistol Team members happened to meet at the range and drive out there together.  wink wink.

HOLY COW.  Why haven't we done this before?  As a couple of the guys put it, "The most fun we can have with our clothes on!"

Three of us have Kimber 1911s, and another guy is going to shoot Revolver.  Two of us are going to shoot Three Gun with his Mossberg, my Bushwacker, and our Kimbers.  The only catch so far is how spendy .45 ammo can be.  Hmm...200 rounds of .45...that's a lot of food and gas!

Any one else here shoot IPSC?  Any insights, comments, etc?

I’ve shot one match out at the ARPC so far, tons of fun, I look forward to the next one, maybe in April.

Mike puts on a great introduction class if anyone is interested.

You might also come check out Speed Steel, and the ABC house in June is a must.

I've shot one match also. Lot's o Fun.  Maybe we can all hook up for breakfast before the next match.  Dennys Albany?

I'd do that. Or maybe even the Pine Cone on HWY 34 just off I-5.

Like any other sport, there are some people that take it WAY too seriously and suck the fun out of it.  IPSC, being how it is with the rules lends itself to those kind of people.

Then you get the "gamers" out there that spend hours and hours practicing and timing one particular qualifier stage to up their rating. Kind of ridiculous.

If you're in the right group of people, it's fun. If not, it's like walking around with a bunch of self-centered jerkwads for 5 hours.

Spot on my brotha!
I think that is as important as anything else in regards to IPSC, USPSA, IDPA, PR, SS or an other shooting sport except subgun matches. Then who cares your shooting machine guns!

I shot IPSC a few times but I got a little tired of the gamers and the amount of standing around.  It's too bad there isn't a "Joe Six-Pack IPSC" out there just for people who want to shoot lots and have a little light competition.
If you start going lots, you and your buddies may want to look at doing some reloading.  A Dillon 550 will pay for itself in less than a year if the three of you shot IPSC on a regular basis.

That's cool - you think you can get OSU to giv eyou any sort of sponsor ship?

I went to nationals in October on a paid trip from sponsors for USPSA, I agree it is fun.

I saw the article in yesterday's OSU paper.  If I have any free time next term I'll try to swing over to a meeting.  I shoot at ARPC somewhat regularly.

Any "gun" group which bans camo or "military" style clothing is worthless in my book.

IPSC is WAY too over the top competitive to be that fun.  Trust me, try out some of the other shooting sports so you can compair to IPSC.  Practical rifle is about 10,000x better then IPSC and speed steel is just about as fun too.

Yea, I shot on the OSU pistol team too.

Got tired of standing around?  Where did you shoot?  There is more standing around at PR than any IPSC match I've been to...

I love PR, but can't stand the round count vs time issue.  At IPSC (even 3-gun) I get more time shooting than other 'action' type shoots.

Oh, if you don't like some of the gaming, try IDPA.

I like IPSC because once you get classified, you can have friendly rivalries and compete within your class.  It's really fun to have a good day, and actually get a 1st place ribbon.

Oh, and no the 'no camo' rules... it's a sad but necessary fact that to be considered more mainstream and accepted as a legitimate sport, you can't look like a gaggle of yahoos from a Northern Idaho wilderness compound.  If the Origonian was writing an article about local shooting sports, would you rather have them come to PR or IPSC?

I do agree. And even though they ban camo and "military type gear."

I still have a good time shooting.

There are a bunch of people there who are down-to-earth and nice. Good folks to shoot with.

The courses of fire are entertaining and I think they help to make you (me) a better shooter.

The GMs are fun to watch.

The other dicksnorts out there (the same guys buying Porsches and Vettes, but have no clue how to drive) can just be ignored. Especially when you beat em down with yer little Glock.

There is a lot more standing around in PR. Though USPSA went along pretty fast.

I'm sorry you take offence.  I did not mean to be insulting.  Thank you for your service.  I support your freedom to wear what you want.  A uniformed soldier is a proud icon of America's strength, compassion, and professionalism.

However, I still stand by the sad fact that perception becomes reality.  Although the left wingers preach tolerance, they are not very tolerant of those (like us) who disagree with their agenda.  Hence, given any opportunity, they will characterize us as a radical fringe group of crazy nuts.

I am an advocate of presenting our shooting sports as what they are, a mainstream activity in which the average citizen enjoys and participates.  How you dress and how you look directly impacts the perception of our sports.  You wouldn't wear camo or tye-dye to a job interview?  Why?  Because, for most civilians, it is not mainstream.

Of course, there's the other tactic, which is to shift the median by flooding the data set with large numbers.  How can we make camo more popular and accepted workplace attire?  I'm on board, if we can find a way to do it...

Whoops, should have clarified my opening post a little better.

The official OSU Pistol Team doesn't shoot IPSC, but we went out there as a group of friends to check it out.  So we are paying for our own ammo, and we aren't "Officially" OSU Pistol Team, because we don't have the facilities to train on campus, and only one IPSC gun setup.  However, between the five of us that went, we did have four full setups of IPSC gear.

Man, its a bunch of fun, though.  I believe the next match is early April.  We almost drove to Sherwood to compete the Sunday after our Saturday training, but couldn't find that much .45 ammo that quickly (and the two of us that wanted to go are both 19.)  Next month, though, we will be there in force!

Rally your friends and come up on April 1st for Speed steel. LOADS of fun.
The one thing I like most about it is the amount of trigger time you actually get. You will go thru 200-300 rounds in 6 stages. You shoot each one 5 times. So the down time between shooting is spent loading mags!

So it takes SHTF for you to stand up for whats right?

I am hardly promoting seperation here. Remember, you are the one advocating the idea that what a person wears somehow makes them undesirable.

I understand why, and disagree 100%

"Lets not scare the sheeple, ban camo from IPSC"
"Lets not scare the sheeple, ban evil looking guns"
"Lets not scare the sheeple, ban tattoos"
"Lets not sacre the sheeple, ban heavy metal"
"Lets not scare the sheeple, shut down shooting on public land"
"Lets not scare the sheeple, ban motorocycles"

The point is that there is ZERO reason to ban camo from the shooting sports that is not puking PCness! The only thing this does is keep people from coming out.

I'm just saying that it is a sad truth that people do judge you by how you look.

I find nothing offensive about camo.  However, the mainstream (aka left) media has successfully characterized civilians dressed in military type gear as fringe nuts.  I don't like it.  I don't think it is right.  But, it is a fact.

When I was a Boy Scout selling fundraisers door-to-door, my mother made sure I combed my hair, buttoned up, kept my kerchief straight, tucked in my shirt, and said "Sir" and "Ma'am".  She knew people would judge me and the Boy Scouts by how I looked.  People would form a poor perception of the Boy Scouts if I showed up with my clothes askew and a dirty face.

People do judge us by how we look.

I've got to go now.  I have a family thing to attend.  I'll log on later this evening and check out the thread again.

See ya!

It's not the camo alone, it's the military holsters too. They came out with such dipshit rules years ago that every holster I owned was on the banned list. I don't know if I even own a "permited" holster under current "rules."

So I need new coats, rain gear, belts and holsters to play I(un)PSC. It's the same reason you don't see me at Cowboy matches. Too much new crap to buy to fit their rules, but at least the cowboys have a good reason. IPSC got taken over by people that lump anyone who is or has ever served in the military with the 88 clans in Idaho. That's right, they are calling you NAZIS for wearing U.S. military issue clothing.

I'm back.. at least for a few minutes.

I never knew so many of you hated IPSC.  Do you feel the same way about IDPA or ICORE?

The heart of the matter is, I've shot PR, IPSC, 3-gun, and Speed Steel.  I've never felt out of place or uncompetative because of my gear or clothes.  Everyone is alwasy nice, and I always have fun.

TangoFoxtrot - you don't need a fancy race gun or expensive rig.  Bring your Glock or 1911 (or almost anything else), a cheap kydex holster, some mag pouches, and 4-5 mags, and have fun.  It's really great when you use that k-mart holster and off-the-shelf Springfield to beat the guys with $2500 race guns.

Not this $h*t AGAIN!!!

The last time the "IPSC bans cammo" argument came up I held my peace but not this time.

For starters in this country, for the most part, we shoot USPSA rules not IPSC get your terms straight.

Jeezus I would have thought that this thread would have gone more the way of "Is my pistol OK to use?" or "What is power factor? And why should I care?" or any number of questions that new USPSA shooters ask. Not *Should my shoes match my hat?*

5.3 Appropriate Dress

“5.3.1 The use of camouflage or other similar types of military or police
garments is discouraged. The exception is competitors who are
law enforcement or military personnel. The Match Director will
be the final authority in respect of what garments competitors are
allowed to wear.” (USPSA rule book 2004)

Rule 5.3.1 is under review at this time and will probably be reworded or removed. This rule is mostly ignored at the local level anyway. Why send a new shooter home because he/she wore cammo? That would be counter productive.

I do not know the history of this rule or the reason for its adoption but IMHO it is because we want to project the image that this sport is for everyone men, women and kids. Our image is "We are NOT militia types". We are a group of shooters who "Run and gun". No disrespect to the fine men and women of our armed forces and police, past or present. Or to PR guys who do wear cammo to their shoots. (That is a different shooting discipline, they wear what they want.) I myself wear a BDU  cammo jacket in winter, and the only thing ever said to me was "What branch were you in?” by a gentleman who was retired military.

We are covered in the news once in a while and there is enough bad press about shooting sports. No need to add additional fuel to the fires of the anti-gun crowd.

Look at the crap that paint ball players get when they play in the woods. We are viewed as a "Bunch of wannabe Rambo's". (Yes, I play paint ball and yes, I wear cammo for woods games.) Should I ignore the views of the unenlightened? Yes I do but that does not change their perception of the sport. And in this world of news bite information propagated by the "Drive-by meda" perception is everything. Especially when it comes to guns!

If you had a bad experience shooting USPSA I am sorry. Try a different club. I shoot at Albany.

I invite you all to come and shoot with us. Dress for the weather.

Does the pistol club still have the Dillon Square Deal set up for .45 acp?  You could save a few bucks by loading your own.  When I was involved with the club, 7 years ago now,  I loaded a few thousand rounds on that thing.  It was up on the second level of the range in an old wooded desk.  Some one had rigged it so that it could be locked up in the right hand side cubbord and then could be slid out for use.  In fact the club had a few thousand brass and a gob of primers stored in the safe.  There was even a Springfield 1911 there for team member use.  Don't tell me this is all gone now.

My only insite for you is to keep shooting,  Just get out and do it, IPSC, SS, IDPA, PR, 3 gun, et. al.  it doesn't matter, just get out and shoot.

Mike, Nobody has said they had a bad time shooting PP type events(well except maybe TF!). Only that we disagree with the dress code.
Thank you for pointing out the actual rule and explaining its use.

On that note, my complaint is the same. The idea that the rule is there in the first place is what I have a problem with. Even you labeled those wearing camo as "militia types". I full well understand what your trying to say but disagree with the notion that it is acceptable.

I know judges covered in tattoos and bikers that attend church more often then most. What they are wearing makes them no more or less anything.

My only insite for you is to keep shooting,  Just get out and do it, IPSC, SS, IDPA, PR, 3 gun, et. al.  it doesn't matter, just get out and shoot.

Let me be the first to say, welcome to the board!

See, I knew CH was a warm-and-fuzzy, touchy-feely kinda guy! I can't believe you got banned, even if it was for only a couple of hours!   j/k

Oh, and welcome to the HTF, P_P!

Next time you see a solder wearing his uniform to a match, make sure to mention that is your take on camo. As a matter of fact, as a person who once wore that uniform proudly, I take great offense to what you just said and glad it was said here and not on the range.

Bunch of PC bullshit. Further seperation within our own ranks is all this is.

Considering that unless it's a military sponsored function, you're not supposed to be wearing your uniform for any reason other than going to, while at, or going home form work....

So what? Should I call the MPs the next time a solder shoots PR in uniform?
The topic is the ruling itself, not military code.

Yeah, we have the Springfield 1911...its attached to a Marvel .22 kit; its actually the gun I shoot Team competitions with, because I learned on a 1911 and was a lot more comfortable shooting that then the Hammerlis or Smith and Wessons.

I know we have some actual bullets for repacking, and I know exactly what desk you are talking about.  That drawer is still locked, and I never thought to open it.  I'll ask the president about it next time club meets.  I know one of the guys on team reloads; he'd be able to at least show us how to do it.  Thanks for the heads up.

Yeah, some n00b questions:
Can I use my 1911?  (yes)
Is my gun Major or Minor (major!  its a .45)
What's a power factor? (Bullet weight * bullet speed) / (1000)
Major : over 165 Power Factor
Where can I shoot USPSA?  (Albany is the closest)
How is it scored?  (its complicated!  Score / time in seconds)

Any other n00b questions?

So it takes SHTF for you to stand up for whats right?

I am hardly promoting seperation here. Remember, you are the one advocating the idea that what a person wears somehow makes them undesirable.

So again, What is so offensive about camo?

See ya!

First, let me say that I have never been to one of these shoots or any PR type event.

Second, you finding nothing offensive about camo but you defend the left wing media by playing into the whole "ewww people in camo, scary gun nuts" simply by not standing up and saying "just cause they wear camo at a shoot doesn't me anything." And you agreeing with this rule is playing right into their hands.

Third, I'd watch all the Boy Scout talk! I happen to be an adult volunteer for them and wear BDU's as my uniform all the time. DAMN straight people judge me in uniform, respect it and know what it means and why I'm proud to wear a uniform! I don't wear it cause it looks good, I wear it because, ok hold on to your hat, this is going to be mind
blowing.........
IT'S PRACTICAL!!!!!! IT'S FUNCTIONAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope I made my point!

Fourth, Thanks to all the guys and gals who have served our Country! Thanks for your service, past, present, and future.

Ok I'll be over here now .....>
