So it seems a small herd of baby coons have taken up living in my backyard/under the shed/ in the tree next to the chicken coop. Like clockwork they come outside at dusk, unfortunately right before the chickens go in for bed, which makes it hard to get them all shut in the coop because they get skittish. The raccoons are smaller than cats and don't seem interested in the chickens (yet). Maby only 2-3 lbs each and have no fear of humans really. 5 of them, all sticking together.

Question is this- I can't shoot shovel shut up because of where I live, (and they're fucking cute, gf and female roommates would kill me). It's a serious chunk of change to buy enough traps to get them in one go. I'm afraid they'll grow up and go for the chickens.

What do I do?

Buy a couple burmese pythons.....let them go in the area.  They'll definitely take care of them.

Maybe true but that won't help the chickens much.

Will that work outside Florida? And can they be trained to cuddle nicely with chickens?

Oh, there's no way your chickens would be safe
I figured the coons would be taken care of, the chickens would be gone and then come winter, the snakes would be gone too.
Then next year start fresh with some chicks

It's the only foolproof plan I can think of

I have a have-a-heart trap you can borrow. Email me if your interested. Works like a charm. Coons love tater chips.

Have a heart trap will do the trick. Just keep putting it out until you get them all.

The nice thing with the traps is you can move them to a place and then shoot them.

Trap them, one at a time if you have to. You can then either relocate the critters or drop the trap into a garbage can full of water. Problem solved. When the coons get big enough, they will go for the chickens. Take care of the problem now before you have a bigger problem later.

I might be able to help with a pellet rifle if that would be the way to go.

They  are cute and fuzzy till you have chicken parts strewn about and they are chewing on a dying screaming bird.  I lost a lot of birds to coons.

It's a lot of fun to shooting them at night with cb caps.
Plus you work on your nighttime cqb skills.

Also delicious

If you think they're cute take them to the vet for shots and collar tags.

Or man up, and get another girlfriend.  Or, ask someone with a silencer to take them out.  Or, get a good air rifle.

Pour ammonia around the shed they'll leave.

Have-a-hearts do work fantastic.  I've got one or two I'd lend you, also.  Seems like there's enough here to catch 'em all.

Just pm me if you're interested.

Hey guys thanks so much for the outpouring of help. I have a pellet rifle but its WAY Louder than a suppressed .22.

I really really appreciate it and will probably take some of you guys up on the haveaheart trap offer. I'm heading down to Ft. Bragg NC to visit my buddy this week/end but I'll be back in state next week and will try to figure it all out before then.

Until then I'll have the GF posted on watch with a shotgun and broom

My uncle had several. It can be done but is a big commitment. They are very interesting pets.

A generous helping of a UDAP bear mace canister will relocate them post-haste.
