Years ago I read somewhere how much wasted time you spend dealing with (let alone reading) junk mail.  Well, you can go to the Post Office and ask them how to stop some of it.  I know from personal experience that they don't take too kindly to stuffing it back in the out box.

One method I highly recommend, when they include a postage paid return envelope, is to stuff all of the material (less your personal information to include any bar codes) in there and send it right back at’m.  Very satisfying.

Anyway, here is how you can significantly reduce your mailbox fodder:

1) Call ADVO INC. toll free: 1-888-241-6760
2) Visit Direct Marketing Ass.(holes?) (DMA) and get MPS to remove your address:

How to register for MPS

We have 3 ways to register for MPS -- postcard or letter mail-in option, online form mail-in option, and online. Consumers must register with MPS directly; second-party requests and bulk requests cannot be processed. For the integrity of the MPS file, we need to verify that the person making the request is actually who they say they are. If done in writing, this is accomplished by receiving the consumer's signature. Over the Internet, the credit card quickly authenticates the person making the request; a nominal fee is charged for this faster service.

1) Postcard or Letter Mail-in Option (Free):
There is no charge for registering by mail. However, registering by mail may delay for a month or so inclusion in the MPS file because this requires time to manually add this data to the service. Please send a postcard or letter that includes your name, home address, and signature to us at:
Mail Preference Service
Direct Marketing Association
PO Box 643
Carmel, NY 10512

2) Online Mail-in Option (Free):
There is no charge for registering by mail. However, it is not as fast as the "Complete Online Option" (below). Please complete the form below. When you have finished entering your information select the "Register by Mail" button which will generate a unique tracking number to speed the processing of your request. Please print out the completed form and mail at the address printed on the form.

I like to save the junk mail for a few days and then stuff all the postage paid return envelopes with a mix of junk from different companies. Always make sure to put NRA stuff in the AARP envelope.

I remember reading a post in GD a while back about a guy who took it to the extreme. IIRC he said the post office will accept packages up to 72 lbs. with the postage paid return envelope taped to the outside. This guy sent boxes of cut up old tires, rocks, sticks, garbage, all kinds of crap.  He said if you include your info, they usually figured out that you wanted to be excluded from their list.

All of that works just fine.......for a few weeks or months but just as soon as you give out your address for any reason ie. cabellas catalog, new credit card, smiths fresh value card etc. the junk mail starts again. I even remember hearing that the dmv sold our addresses, I know that ndow or the hunt application office does.
