We’d love to see some new faces. No need to carry weight first time out if you don’t want to. Just come by and check it out if you’re interested at all.

Won’t be able to make it this Sunday, but I am interested in future events. I better up my ruck game. :)

No need to show up ready and trained to hike 6+ miles under a heavy pack. Provisional is only 3 miles with 35lbs., and no one says you have to do even that your first time out. Step is just show up and meet everyone, where it goes from there is up to you. |

Slight hijack here, if there are people up here in the great while north region of Illinois (Lake County) I would be interested in doing that up here. I rarely have a full day to kill driving an hour+ in each direction. Hit me up with an IM if you live up here and want to get your hike on.

There's another northern guy that has expressed interest- @Bigfoot_Wallace Maybe you two could hook up. I'm willing to head north to hike if you guys can't find a 3rd guy more local. The main point here is to get like minded people networking, but if you want to work toward APC ratings they require 3 unrelated people for witnessing purposes. What would be optimal would be getting 3+ guys involved up there, but a lot of the guys we already have are willing to travel a bit to meet and greet anyone interested. |

Quoted: Thanks! How’d it go today? Besides wet and windy. ?? View Quote It was both of those things, though the rain did taper off around the halfway point and was never all that heavy. Last time at this location was a total downpour, so I guess this was an improvement on that. We ended up without our local guy who know the trails so our pace suffered a bit due to navigation troubles. Attached File |

Newbie questions:
What type of pack do you recommend? And what are you stuffing in the pack for weight? Thanks! |
|
[#8]
The ILBE pack seems to be a popular choice, main thing is you want something with a frame and a decent waist belt.
Weight, a lot of guys use sand, the idea being you can dump it if you have to. Water softener salt, kitty litter, weight plates from a home gym, there's a lot of options. |

No, nothing planned for tomorrow but we’ll continue to post up here when something is happening.
FWIW, all you need is a couple buddies if you don’t want to wait for someone else to schedule something. |

I'm up for within within an hour from my house.
Weather looks good on Sunday. |
|
[#16]
Waterfall Glen? 3, 6 or 9 mile options, we could stage a vehicle or two if people have different goals.
@missumbigtime @McD01 |
|
[#17]
Everytime i do 9 my feet fall apart.
I'd say 4-6 miles would be good for me. |
|
[#18]
9 seems unlikely, especially if we get some new guys there. Just saying we have options.
4 would be hard there unless we just do a straight out and back. We could do a 6 mile out and back route, stage a vehicle at the far end for anyone who wants to bail or drop weight at 3. |
|
[#19]
Sounds good. Thanks for the heads up.
I have worked near that trail for 30 years and have biked and run the main loop many times. |

I edited the title to reflect more recent plans. Any preferences on timing?

I'll be out of town on Sunday so I won't be able to make the hike. Bummer. Good luck, dudes.
As far as packs go, the USMC surplus ILBE is tough to beat. They can be had for about $100 and they're built like a tank. Once you get them dialed in they're pretty comfortable, too. Plus, they're Marine packs so they're just fundamentally cool |
|
[#23]
I think I can make Sunday morning work. Would a 9:00am start time be ok? I’ve got roughly a 90 minute drive to get there.

PS- anyone willing to show up a little early to stage a vehicle at 3 miles, drop we a note and we'll work it out. |

Looking forward to tomorrow. I think I’ve got 6 miles in me, I guess we’ll find out tomorrow. I’m gonna start light, 15 pounds (roughly) in a discreet plate carrier.
Question: the gf needs her Jeep tomorrow so it’s quite likely that I’ll need to drive my car. Is the parking area paved and reasonably safe? Looks like it’s paved from the pic, just want to be sure. Thanks! |

I'm out. Came down w/ flu like symptoms yesterday morning, feel like I've been run over, repeatedly.
Have fun |

Good hike today! Great turnout!
I look forward to seeing everyone again soon. |

Yep, nice hike and great to meet some new people. Congrats to McD01 on knocking out his provisional hike (and then some).
Hope to see you guys again soon. Attached File |
