| I live in Alabama, but a close friend of mine who lives in Indiana has asked me to help him purchase his first gun. Are there any specific rules I need to be aware of before I start helping him. For example he says that he has to have a license to purchase a pistol and I am not finding anything online that says that. I should also mention that he lives in Indianapolis. |

And by carry you mean actually putting it on his person or in his car loaded and ready to go, not locked in the trunk unloaded on the way to the range? Yes. It's a license to carry a handgun meaning you can open carry or concealed carry. http://www.in.gov/isp/2828.htm |

It's not true that he needs a license to transport a gun. He is allowed to transport a handgun to or from the place or purchase, or to or from a place of repair without a license. If he wants to take the gun to the range, he needs a license. There are 3 types of licenes. There is a target license, which allows him to transport to and from the range, but not carry concealed. I believe this is valid for 3 or 4 years. There is a concealed carry license, which allows him to transport to and from the range, and carry concealed. I believe this is also valid for 3 or 4 years. Indiana also has a lifetime concealed carry permit. This is more expensive than the normal concealed carry permit, but it never has to be renewed. This is his best option if he plans to stay in Indiana.
As far as firearms go, there are no real restrictions on handguns. There is no magazine limit. With the right paperwork, he can have a suppressor. |

That law changed in July. |
