Bexar County. We currently have ATT, and are increasingly frustrated with their 6mps "Elite" package. Not reliable. Bogs down just watching Youtube, lag spikes during gaming. Customer service sucks. My parents have basic roadrunner, and it's slow, but only 3mbps, so not really a fair comparison. I am waiting to see if GVTC has fiber in my area, but I'm doubting it. ATT doesn't have their Uverse here, and it's a new development. Any other options? Primarily looking for Internet/voice service. We don't watch enough tv to justify cable, but if it's a basic package and saves money with the other 2 services, we'll consider it. Praise/horror stories etc welcome. |

I think you may have other issues.
We are out in Bandera Co. We have a choice between dial-up or AT&T DSL. The fastest package they offer out here is 3mps which is what we have. We have no issues watching videos (youtube or netflix), or lag with online gaming. I play Battlefield 2 on the PC. We have a desktop computer on a wired network plus a wireless router which at any given time has laptops, ipads/ipods and gaming systems running. Never seem to have any real problems. Have you tried testing your speed with sites like cnet bandwidth meter to see what you are actually getting? |

Just ran it. 4.6Mbps Ran it a couple more times. 2.0 Mbps, 2.7, 3.8....... Well, you are getting faster speeds than us, but we don't seem to have the problems you are having. Unless maybe it's a bottleneck with too many people in your neighborhood.......... We don't have neighbors out here. OTOH, I just ran it and we are getting 2.3 - 2.4Mbps. |
| I'm kind of in the same boat as the OP. I'm in northeast San Antonio and have had AT&T DSL for years along with home phone. Got rid of my phone service and seems like I've had more issues now with my DSL than before. Mine drops the connection often, usually in the afternoon/evenings. When it's not dropping the line it's often sluggish, slow to load/run any video with audio. Of course the AT&T tech that came out to service it last time said I had one of the best connections he had seen in a long time and in doing that CNet test I got 4.96 and 5.01. So it looks good, but still sucks at times. And I've tried 2 different computers so I'm thinking it's not the computer. They send me offers 2 times a week to change to Uverse, but I'm leary of that when I can't seem to get good internet as it is from them. I swore off the big cable company (now Time Warner) many years ago, but I think they may be the only option right now if I want to change. |

Quoted: Where in Bexar County has GVTC? GVTC replied this morning.. GVTC services IH10 around Fair Oaks and up toward Boerne, over to Canyon Lake, Spring Branch and Bulverde and a small part of New Braunfels. Yeah ATT has tried to blame my computer (new laptop), house wiring (new house so STFU ATT).. etc.. Kinda tired of it, but not sure if anyone else would be better. Although I'm not a power user, I'd like to be able to watch the occasional video, and play online without lag. |

Frankly, I'm tired of all the U-verse advertising, including the mailouts and the door hang tags then when you call...
"U-verse is not available in your area." Fuck. What does it cover 2% of the US? Seriously, I live in a suburb of Dallas. I couldn't get it when I actually lived in the city of Dallas. I think I have the 1.5 dsl. It sucks ass. Most of the time, 3G on my cell phone is faster. |

I think the NRA could give them a good run for their money though as far as advertising/mailings though. I just got a letter from AT&T on Saturday with an offer for $64 for 6 months of Uverse/internet and today Monday I get another letter offering $89.

AT&T uverse in my area, suburb of Dallas, has horrible problems. The local UPS store is a dropoff point and I know the owner. He gets equipment dumped on him all the time and the customers are pissed. Same story all the time, couldn't get it to work, technicians in and out of thier houses all blaming someone else.
I've heard others have no problems in different areas |

You may be too far away from their switch to have good DSL service. However I have DSL at the PRO speed ( Slower than yours ) with ATT and have no trouble watching video or playing Online shooter games however I am in the san antonio metro area. You may just have to wait for them to upgrade their systems before your speed increases. |

Quoted: If Clear Internet is available where you're at give them a shot. I've used them for two years now with no problems other than communicating with outsourced CS on an equipment change. The Clear Spot is a pretty damn cool device. Isn't that a wifi based signal to your house? I went to their website, and it's pricey. I'm curious what the reliability is like. Yes we have Time Warner cable in the area also. |
