Hey all,

I went shooting yesterday and while looking at my spent casings from my 45, I found this:

These were brand new loads from the factory and purchased at WalMart!

The ammo was the "CCI BLAZER BRASS"...

I dont know if it's normal for the primer to be pushed out like that, however I would rather ask you all to get a better concensus. "Sortafast" and I both thought that it was quite disturbing.  So take a look at the pic and give me your two cents if you are so inclined.

Thanks
Ken

Still hard to tell from the pic - got a zoom shot?

Well if not.. In my experience it's normal for a primer to flatten out a bit.. what I'd be more concerned about is if that primer is protruding from the base of the case or is swollen in a weird way.

It's hard to tell from that pic but IMO the bottom line is that if ammo is doing something you think isn't righ DON'T shoot it!  A few dollers worth of ammo isn't worth a new gun or hand.  I wonder what WalMart's policy is on defective ammo?  Good luck.

cant get much better w/ a 3 mp camera, lemme try another shot.

Here's 2 more without the flash.

The one from above is a bit blury, but the discolored area on the primer is actually bulging out.

When I took my calipers to it the bulge is approx .991 (including total length of cartrige) where as at the edge of the primer (no bulge) .901

Just wierd

Mexi-Mart's policy is no policy, call the manufacturer

yeah, those suckers were poping back out a bit.  They didnt feel too bad when shooting, but when my hands get cold they dont work quite right so I would be a poor judge.  I kinda wonder if the primers themselves were a little on the thin side, and thats what caused it.  Could be a possibility.  Either way I probably wouldnt shoot anymore.  It would be very sad to have a KB'd 1911 or have to learn to shoot like a lefty.  I had a few primers in some Radway Green blow in my old mini-14, and that was a little less than pleasurable.  Kinda ruins your day of shooting when you get all kinds of crap in your eyes.  I say call CCI.  They seem like a pretty decent Co to deal with.

Is it possible that your breech face is damaged around the firing pin? That could result in what you are seeing.

Just a thought.

Here are some pics of the breach face.  I know they're a bit fuzzy, however it looks perfectly normal to me.  There were other rounds that were not quite this bad.

That is NOT normal (first post pic).

Looks like overpressured and/or headspace.

Thin primer cups won't do that-

Something aint right, but it's not in front of me and the pics aren't good enough for me to tell exactly what isn't right.

It doesn't do that with other brass/loads?

Not normal bud,
I don't think I would shoot any more of them. Have you shot any other loads out of it lately?

yeah, ran out there today and ran some remmi through it and the brass looked normal

Take that crap back to China-mart, and tell them that your life was endangered, and unless you get a full refund, you will stand out front with a sign saying they sell defective crap. Then when they say no, ask to speak with a manager. They suck anyway, since they quit selling guns. I refuse to shop there anymore. When you get your $15.00 back, go over to Buy-Mart and get some ammo there. Then call me and will go out and shoot it up. Your lucky you got a friend like me.

yeah, and by the way, be at east creek at 2pm

Here's a comparison side by side. Same brand, same lot and box.  YOu can tell that one was loaded hot, and the other is normal

Could it be the boolitts? I thought I read on the internet that improperly seated bullets could cause higher pressures. Would it be worthwhile to compare some of the unfired rounds to see if they are all about the same or does that particular problem happen when they are chambering and get pushed back into the brass?

Nah. The rest I learned from the high speed Delta Seal Ranger SAS guys at fun shows. I could tell which ones they were because as I recollect they all wore the same uniform: woodland BDU trousers, a shotgunner shirt, and a photographer's vest.

well, I went out today and shot some more out of the gun w/ different ammo and it's still doing it.  I am going to call Taurus tomorrow and find out what needs to be done. Anyone ever have to do warranty stuff w/ them?

Can I just UPS it myself w/o going to an FFL to the manufacturer?  Or do I need to do the whole transfer debocle.
5/4/2007 9:35:58 PM EDT

Unless things have changed, you don't have to do the FFL thing again.

Camo Ken,

Looks like the slide starts rearward before the case can slam against the breech and re-seat the primer. A guess would be the barrel lugs are not properly fitted to the slide and you don't have enough lock-time for this to happen.  A smith needs to look at it.
