Has anyone here been there?  Any tips or must see areas?  I'm planning on spending about 4 days there in May.  I know it will be cold, but we're trying to beat the crowds (of bugs and people).

I've been there twice.

It doesn't get all that crowded, even in July-August. Yellowstone gets more visitors in a day that IRNP gets all year.

Here are pictures from my last trip.

Thanks!  Are those shelters first come, first serve?  If we arrive on a Wed, and leave on a Sat do you think we can see a decent amount of the island?

I've backpacked the Superior Hiking Trail a bunch and my friend is Army Infantry so we're both experienced/in shape.

Yes, the shelters are first come first served.

You'll get to see quite a bit, but the island is huge and rugged. I've been up there on my boat, (which makes it a lot easier to get around), twice for seven days each and I haven't even seen everything there.

It is one of the coolest places I've ever been. I'm going back this year.

Sounds good.  Rugged is good IMO.  Wish I was spending a whole week there, but we're fishing for the first couple days of the week..then hauling ass up the shore to Grand Portage to take the ferry to IR.

I back packed across as a Boy Scout way back and it was the best trip I ever took. 5 days to make it all the way across the length of the island (~55 miles). We had to take a ferry out to there, but, well worth the trip.

Its never really been a "tourist trap" type event. Go anytime you want, really. I talked to a Scout master who just did it 2 years ago... just plan in advance and your good to go.

I hear it's popular for the, um, 50 mile plus hike merit badge I think it's called.  It's definetly on my list of places to haul arse across before I die.

I'd also like to get up there sometime. Sooner than later hopefully. Hopefully I can make this happen this year.

Dang good Lake Trout fishing in the area as well...  I've made two "extended weekend" trips to the area and have yet to set foot on dry land...  the diehard fisherman in me won that battle.
