| I have a job offer in Jackson. Whats it like around there? |
|
I live in Birmingham Alabama now which is not without it's share of problems but I lived in Mississippi for 25 years. I think Jackson is a little worse than Bham but I guess in major city has it's problems.
Like the previous poster said, I guess it would depend on where your job is located at and where you would have to travel through to get there. The downtown area is pretty damn rough but the "Jackson Metro" area is pretty broad with some not so bad areas. Most people live outside of Jackson in one of the suburbs and commute in. |
| i lived there 9 years. the problem with jackson is you have to live on the outskirts to not be subject to the ridiculous crime all the time. therefore every time you want to go somewhere it takes 30 minutes. they do have good restaurants and it's close to good hunting areas. nice range in byram too. |
| If you don't mind a little driving it is not that bad. Check out the Madison\Ridgeland or Brandon\Pearl or even Clinton areas. Far enough out to keep the walkers away and a quick hop on the interstate puts you wherever you need in town quickly. There are definitely some places deep downtown and in the west Jackson area where you probably don't want to go even at high noon, but if you keep your eyes open most of the trouble areas are easy to avoid. |

I grew up in Jackson. I carry with a reload within city limits. The police force is usually worse than useless. That is the bad news. The good news: Host of the international ballet competition. Great food choices. Shopping in the suburbs is decent. Downtown is actually very safe (southwest Jackson is Somalia south though). Enough of a college crowd to keep decent bands coming. Fondren area is very trendy and fun. I'd look at the Eastover neighborhood, Belhaven neighborhood, a downtown condo, or Northeast parts of town within city limits and the Madison suburb to the north. Most of the horror stories you hear are from people that don't live in Jackson. Crime is a big issue, but it is usually confined to areas of the city I doubt you would have any business in anyway. I wouldn't leave my doors unlocked or a lawnmower out in plain view, but I don't sleep with a rifle either. |

If you come down here to check it out, let me know. I live outside of jackson. I'll be more than happy to show you around.
You couldn't pay me to live in Jackson. The city council is a joke. Taxes for car tags are astronomical. Property taxes are high. Police are not what I would call efficient. three just got picked up a month ago for assisting an undercover FBI agent with running drugs, in their marked patrol cars and uniforms. Madison county and/or Rankin county is where I would look to live if I was moving here for a job. Jackson? no way. |

A virtual war zone in some parts of the city, just about as bad as Memphis and New Orleans. I'd seriously reconsider if possible. I live in Hattiesburg, about 80 miles or so south, but their news does make it down here. As bad as we can be in New Orleans, for sheer shithole-ness, we ain't even in Jackson's league. I'd sooner live in the worst part of this town than Jackson. (And I live and work in New Orleans, and I have lived in Jackson in the past.) ETA: Hee-hee! 12345! |

ETA: Hee-hee! 12345! it's spreading in madison too. yesterday, at 5pm we had a 70 year old man kidnapped in front of walgreens in a very nice area http://www.wapt.com/news/30754789/detail.html Police said about 5 p.m., customers called 911 after they noticed something disturbing. "They observed two black males pushing an elderly white male into the back of a car,” said Waldrop. Witness said the assailants jumped into the victim's white Toyota Camry and headed north on Highway 51. Police said the men brought the victim to a trailer on Brown Road north of Canton, where they allegedly stuffed the victim into the trunk and then fled. Police said when the victim heard the men drive away, that's when he made a break for it and got out of the trunk and went to get help. Detectives said they caught up with the assailants when they went back to Madison to get their original car. "An officer saw them getting into the car, a pursuit ensued,” said Waldrop. Police said the two suspects, Rashun Johnson and Jerome Van Jr. led them on a chase up Highway 51. They were eventually stopped and arrested near Gluckstadt. |

Wow....and Madison is the place to live in the area. Madison is very nice and has a great school system. |

No response from OP in a while, I think it scared him off. Unfortunately, that's Jackson for you. If he could have been specific about where the job was, say like the Nissan plant, then the responses would have been far more positive. Best of luck to the OP in whatever he decides.
