I am going to Holiday world with my nephew (OK my parents, sister, and brother in law are going as well, but my nephew rocks). We will be staying in the Jasper area. I know that there are many "decent" chain restaurants near the hotel, but is there a someplace that captures the local flavor and is not to be missed?

The Snitchelbank if you like German food.  I believe it's a little pricier.

The Mill House has great American food.

If you're leaving Holiday World and looking for food right then, head to the Chateau in Mariah Hill.  It's about 5miles north of Santa Claus.

Not sure where you'll be coming from, but avoid sr231 from Chrisney to Dale.  It's in the process of getting repaved and is a mess.

If you like Chinese,  I've heard the New Iron Chef or New Iron Buffet (maybe?) in Dale is excellent.  It's a halfblock south of the stop light.

I've been there a couple of times.  It's really good.

Dont forget discount tickets available upon request at McDonalds, and I too recommend the Mill House.

Next trip we will try the German place....

Jeff's Bait and Guns is close by. You can find some good ammo deals there sometimes.

I hate to admit it but I was out voted due to the fact my mom and my sister said "I don't like German food" and the parking lot looked packed. So no Schitzelback. We ended up fazoli's which is OK, because I like their food even considering its more or less fast food(and pretty cheap). We'll be coming back, because the Holiday World/Spashin' Safari is a great value. three excelent wooden roller coasters and overall good amusement park + a first class water park on one admission(not to mention free soft drinks and sunscreen and reasonably priced food) So I'll keep schizelback and millstone in mind for the future.
