i really want to get into reloading. funds wont allow it right now. i have an AR DI 45 that is in desperate need of clean debured brass and clean burning powder to run through break in period. I just really failed at multi-quoting.. I just got a cheap lee handloader and 45 acp dies... I can't reload them yet exactly

Keep your eye on Craig's List. I got my Lee 3-hole turret in trade from my RCBS JR2.
I had to sell off some 9mm brass a while back to cover the cost of my S&W lower, shouldn't be in that position again anytime soon. I do need to get over to Hi-Tech for some drawn-down powder and pulled bullets so I can start making my .223 brass more useful than they are now. Deals are out there, just gotta keep looking and have a plan on what you want to get. |

Got my 2010 tax refund from MO (loooong story) and now I am working on my 223 brass... holy shit this is a workout, now I can tell my doctor that I, indeed, have been exercising! Sizing rifle brass shouldn't be a work out. Are you using lube ?? Imperial is what I recommend for rifle. Or are you refering to tumbling brass ? |

I've got an XL650 that has never been mounted on a bench. It's either mounted on a Lee stand or in it's box while Hornady AP or Dillon 550 is mounted on stand.
In the grand scheme of my reloading room there will be a large table in middle of room surrounded by shelves. Will still have some presses on portable stands. I was using pictured hand press at range when photo was snapped. Presses don't need a bench, bolted to a wall. |
| Not making any comment about the above offered lubes, just what I use. Pistol brass (all straight walled) I have the dies that you dont need lube. But for all rifle except for my 50 BMG, I use Dillion spray lube. I use the imperial sizing wax for the 50. Hand wiping imperial sizing wax on hundreds of .223 brass is crazy in my mind. Now I can use a boot (shoe box) box and spray about 100 shells and stir toss them around so that all sides get a coating. Then let them dry for 5 to 10 minutes, depending on how hot or cool in the garage. BTW the lanolin in the spray stuff is good for dry hands. |
Aah Festus, yer a troubled one.
Max-Paul, We're talking hand presses here. Hand lubing .223 by hand ain't as big a deal as you make it sound. I use Dillon spray too for .223. Then throw it in XL650 case feeder afterwards for sizing with Dillon carbide die, deprime and trim with RT-1200 trimmer. Mr. sseagle ain't got a set-up like that so I'm making suggestions tailored to his mode of operation. Imperial works even better. I can lube a batch by smearing inside of coffe can, top lid and shake. Stiill needs a little smear inside case mouth. I even use case lube with carbide pistol dies using Hornady One Shot aerosol. Dries fast and makes a big difference for me. Easier on press index. That all said, sizing with hand press is much easier with Imperial lube. I'm talking the wax-like stuff. |

Get a progressive That is the next goal... when funds increase slowly over time... or I win the lottery I rarely use the progressive for anything other than pistol rounds, with a case and bullet feeder its amazing... rifle rounds almost always get loaded** on the single stage. (*223 is the only ones ever loaded on the progressive) I can guarantee any of you loading does not save you money! you just shoot more for the same amount |

1911,
Check, did see that the gent is using the LEE hand press (not bench mounted). True I have never operated a hand press so I can not really comment on the difference between Imperial sizing wax and the Dillion spray as to one being more slick than the other. I only know that hand lubing several hundred cases of .223 would be a bugger to do. I see either it was you or someone else uses a coffee can in some manner. Ditto Festus you one sick pup |

yes, its a lee hand press.. its not that horrible, and it makes me slower at work, which makes me have work to do all day (aka less staring at tanks on wikipedia) Lubing isnt really all that bad, and some of the brass seems to go great, so I might have some range pickups that are just a bit banged up |

Man if you are using a hand press to resize more than a hand full of brass it IS really that bad.....you can get a lee bench mount press for like $30. Also I know this stuff is hated here but I use the heck out of Hornady one shot and have never had a problem. Nah, making my lats all ripped... and making me sleep like a big fat hairy infant. I've got everything that I intend on reloading prepped now, save for the bag of M193 with the sealed primers, my deprimer keeps backing out on them, I'll fight them later on. Now I need a caliper, a good scale, primers, bullets, and powder... and coke and hookers? |

You can get a caliper at most any part store for $20-$30 that will work just fine and a Lee scale will do the job if your trying to stay low buck. |

Harbor Freight's caliper has been working fine for me for a few years now. I think it was $16 on sale. ETA: I got an email coupon that makes it under $12. IM if interested, good until 7/2 and works on their website as well. |
