| Quick question that I was hoping someone could give me a good answer for. I'm doing a report and was curiuos if it is illegal to own a rifle (specifically an AR15 lower) that was manufactured without a serial number. Is it legal to posses or illegal? Any help will be appreciated. *please note that the question will also pertain to firing the firearm when completed or if it is completely illegal to be used as a normal AR. Thank you again! |
| Ive always heard you can manufacture a receiver for your own use as long as you dont sell it but in any event check local, state and federal laws before doing anything. But in your state if u can do that you would still have to follow the law for the legal configuration the weapon has to be in to be legal. |

Pretty sure it depends on the State as far as registration/serial number goes. IRCC, you can't buy a firearm without a serial number from a dealer. You can get 80% lowers though...however those aren't firearms. They are merely blocks of Metal that are cut.
Seeing that you are from California....I would think that anything doing with guns is heavily regulated and probably illegal without some kind of tax/stamp/serial number..whatever. I am sure there are people out there are far more knowledgeable than me on the subject. Also, you may want to try the ATF website for information. ATF Firearms As always, please correct me if I am wrong. |

Quoted:
Federally, - all firearm manufacturers must use a serial number since 1968 - you may build your own personal firearm without one (and also sell it as per laws regarding any other personally owned firearm) - it's a crime to remove an existing serial number - OS This. But you're in CA, so you're already F'd 8 ways to Sunday... |
