The front plate thread and also an incident this weekend got me thinking.

Was in a parking lot and I thought someone stole my car.  Saw a car drive by that was the same make/model/year and color of my vehicle with a license plate one digit off from mine.  Heard someone say that the last three letters in a WI plate are somewhat indicative to the make/model.  Don't know if this is true or not.

Anyone have some insider knowledge if there's some logic behind license plates or is it totally and completely random?

To my knowledge it is random, so to speak. Each teller at the DMV has a series of plates. each number is one higher than the next. Sounds like the next guy in line at the DMV just happened to have the same car as you.

Car dealers have plates in a series too. When we bought my wife's new Malibu from the local Chevy dealership, they had sold 3 Malibus that week, and one of the others was the same dark blue as ours... and the plate is one number higher. All their car plates end with the same 3 letters (JPX), be it a Malibu or Suburban, as I see them all over town (all have the same dealer decal on the rear so I know where they were purchased). I don't think it has anything to do with make or model of vehicle, as their used cars (some are Toyota, Ford, Honda) have the same letters in their plates too. The only thing in common is where they got the plates.

I was behind a truck just like mine, same color and everything.  It had the same dealer sticker on the tailgate, and the license plate was one number off of mine.

ETA:  And on a somewhat unrelated note, someone in Milwaukee a few years ago had their plates stolen.  Just so happened that my plate was similar, and my plate was entered as stolen instead of the stolen plate.  It was also one number off.

It's random, with the exception that a dealer will often receive a bunch of plates in sequential order, so you may see a bunch of Chevy cars with similar plates, Ford cars with similar plates, etc.

With the above I will also note that plates are transferable so there is no way it's tied to make/model
