My wife has worked at a large, "shall remain nameless" corporation for 12 years, most of those in an upper level position.  She has been blessed with a great salary, that has allowed the both of us as a married couple enjoy a comfortable life together for the past 2 years.  We aren't driving around in BMWs and dropping money on stupid stuff, but life has been very comfotable.  My career choice, law enforcement, is a bad paying one, but one that I thoroughly enjoy.

This past week, my wife was told she is being laid off.  It really sucks and has her riding an emotional roller coaster.  Luckily, without getting too much into it, we have some room to breathe for a little bit.

My wife had access to a gym and gym classes where she was employeed, but now thats going away, so we signed up for a gym membership close to our house yesterday.  I haven't been to a gym since highschool!  I used to be able to maintain some sort of physical fitness just by eating whatever I wanted and doing some manual labor now and then.  Now I am 33 years old, and my physical fitness ain't what it use to be!  I am actually a little nervous about getting into a gym and looking like a retard because I don't know what I'm doing.

That is all.  Carry on!

Most gyms include an initial session with a trainer to explain the equipment they have, how to use it safely, and recommend a workout routine.  I need to get back to the gym myself, it sucks how much harder is to get or stay in shape after 30.

I don't know you either, the mechanical contractor I work for can't find enough good people. Do a google search for McKenneys inc.

I hate to hear that. I'm sure your wife already knows this, but she needs to be on LinkedIn with a detailed, up to date profile. That is how most companies/recruiters work these days. If she is in the realm of finance, I would be happy to introduce her to some top notch recruiters for leads. I've been on that roller coaster for the last five years, and while I sucks, something better comes out of it.

As for you and the gym, remember that you can't ramp up and recover as fast as you used to. I just had the pleasure of having two pins put in my finger to hold it together because I was playin soccer like I did in my prime (I'm almost 41).   Take it slow and change your diet as well.

Don't worry about what other people are thinking. If they are paying attention to you, they are there for the wron reasons.

Good luck!

I worked for McKenney's as a co-op from GT (over in Building Services). Great company. If I were in that industry that would be the place I wanted to be at.

Getting laid off sucks.

If they offer her outplacement help, take them up on it. Its a great way to get her resume in order, get her "exit statement" ready, figure out a job search strategy and practice interviewing. Hopefully they'll show her some tools for using Linkedin and other social media to find work. Linked in is great to do some basic research on companies she is targeting and for checking out people she'll interview with. It is nice to walk into an interview and know a little about the person, and if you have things in common, like former employers, schools, frat/sorority, veteran status, common colleagues, etc.

Good luck to her, and know that she'll be on a bit of an emotional roller coaster.

We're in the process of laying off 5% of our work force. I should find out in early October if I'm "affected."

My nephew just got a job with McKenneys this year after graduating from Auburn.  He was working on a project downtown, I think the old Sears building.  Now he's on a project in Tennessee I believe.

03rangerxlt,  stay positive and be supportive of your wife while she searches for a new job.  The gym will help a little with the stress that LIFE has just thrown at y'all.

Good luck!

We're in Marietta.

Thanks for all of the kind words guys.

Her "old" company is offering 6 months of a service to help with getting her resume up to date.  I recommended to her that she use one of the unused bedrooms upstairs as an office to set up her "command center" for finding a new job.  i think she needs to get out of the bedroom where she ussually uses her laptop, just for her own mental health.  She is on Linked in, but her profile isn't the strongest yet.

My only concerns are for her and for us.  Right now, I am just being there for her, but it kills me that there isn't anything I can do to fix this for her.  She feels like she failed, but I don't see it that way.  In the long term, I just hope we can deal with the stress collectively and healthily as a married couple.  We've only been married for a little over a year and this is the most stressful thing that has happened to us.  But right now, it seems to be going ok (no arguing or fighting).

I've found each of my last two jobs through recruiters. Many senior level positions are no longer advertised on job sites because they don't want to wade through 1000 resumess

Randy Hain ( look him up) is a well known atlanta based recruiter that is not industry specific.

Agree with recruiters for senior level positions.

Have her set up a free google phone number that she can forward to her cell phone. If she decides to post her resume on a job board, remove your street address info, and use the google phone number. Also, have her set up a separate email address for her job search. Keeps work and play separate. Make sure she uses a strong password on the email, because someone will use a brute force attack to gain access to it.

Great idea on setting up a command center/office. You can probably find her a decent desk and chair on Craig's list for next to nothing if you don't have one already.

+1 on LinkedIn.  It eventually led me to the job that I'm at now.  Network Network network

She needs to reach out to friends, get as many connections on Linked In as possible.  Have her search for Atlanta area recruiters.  Once you get on the recruiters radar it's amazing how fast word travels.  She'll begin to get job descriptions sent by recruiters she hasn't even linked with.

I lost my job in July and found not only a better job but at a much higher salary. A friend of mine was contacted by the company I'm now working for, he's happy at his job and passed the opportunity to me.

Can I cuss here?

Oh my fucking legs and arms!!! Yesterday (Saturday) was my 3rd day at the gym. Thursday I worked on arm stuff with a personal trainer.  I could barely move my arms towards the end and my arms still hurt. Yesterday I did legs, and I'm in real pain now!

I did some sort of machine exercise called selecterized adduction. You squeeze the machine together with your knees and it lifts the weights. Now almost everything in my crotch region hurts. OUCH! lol
