Howdy Boys,

I was on GD reading a thread that had to do with whether the OP should load all 40 of his AR mags to capacity and store them in this condition..

I posted on there my wonderment as to where some of the folks that post on GD live...Mogadishu? Some village in Syria?
All of these guys were posting that they have ALL of their AR mags (and presumably others) loaded to capacity and ready to 'fo'

Got me thinking...maybe I am not paranoid enough to be on ArfCom?...or maybe just GD?

So I just wanted to see what my NV brethren thought of this...do you have every magazine you own loaded to capacity and ready to go?

Just to put things in perspective:

I do have a couple of AR 30-rounders loaded, one of them is attached to my home-defense AR (the other one is in a paddle-style carrier, next to the rifle).
I do have a Beta Mag full of 5.56 goodness on standby.

I have a home-defense 12ga. with 6 rounds #4 Buck love in the mag tube (along with 6 slugs in the SideSaddle).

The handguns that my wife and I carry for CCW purposes have full mags and spares at the ready.

I'm pretty sure that we are good-to-go in case anything happens here at the homestead.
I have just never been one of those guys who feels the need to have a loaded gun in every room or in this case have every magazine in my possession loaded and ready to go.

Discuss....

G

The HP has a loaded mag in and a spare.
I alternate with other magazines to give the springs a break.

The AK has a loaded 75 rd. drum, but it's not wound until needed.
Loaded mags are rotated.

The pistol caliber AR has a loaded mag, but I rotate mags for it too.

The revolvers do not care about mags being stored loaded.

Every mag? Not even. I'm ready to go but not against a full platoon.

Kids are for loading magazines. You only need the ammo and mags, along with the kids to load them.

The only reason my mags arent all loaded is because I am lazy. My puddle pirate friend used to keep all his ammo in magazines but his reason was that he didnt want to load them at the range

I do need to get a few more loaded ones around but once again my laziness is winning out

Howdy,

All of the mags Fully loaded!  Hell the F@## NO!

I have a few almost fully loaded mags around the house for the rifles and pistols.  Some speedloaders for the wheel guns.  Why keep all the mags fully loaded??  What are you going to use when you go to the range and practice?

I'd say a good 75% of all my mags are loaded most of the time.

Only reason I keep the other 25% not loaded is that either I have not gotten around to loading them or I am saving them for another purpose that I have not yet determined (testing of various different loads usually).

Just a few mags for my go to defense guns, unless I am expecting an attack by a dedicated force.  If you keep a BOB, then throw some loaded mags in there as well.

Glad to see you gents proffering up your ideas and recommendations.

Also glad to see that I am not the only one who switches out mags and wants to get longevity out of the mag springs.

So....then, apparently I am paranoid enough to be on ArfCom, just not Tier 1 enough to discuss full load-outs on GD!

Swear to God, some of those boys take themselves a little too seriously.

ETA...while I'm not a huge fan of loading every friggin' mag I own...I am quite the believer in stripper clips & stripper clip loaders (guides).
I have 3 ammo cans with 500 rounds of XM193 on stripper clips (with a loader in each can)...these are conveniently located in certain strategic locations in the house.
I also have stripper clip guides in each of the soft gun cases dedicated to each of my ARs (each bag containing six 30-round mags).
Am pretty comfortable with this set-up and have been doing it this way for decades.

Meh GD is fucking retarded and populated by featherless bipeds.

I started to load up all my mags, but then I became lazy. Before the '07 election, I stocked up on a lot of ar15 parts. I still have boxes of empty magazines and backup parts to build a couple more ar's. Springs are not really a concern, I bought a big bag of extra springs and followers. I prefer stripper clips and a couple of magazines. Three stripper clips in the little cardboard box in a bandoleer is quieter and easier for me to carry around anyway.

My first few years on this site, I didn't even know about GD. I spent most of my time in the ar-15 portion. GD is not to be taken seriously.

if i did i'd run out of ammo and have nothing to practice / maintain proficiency with. loading everything would be poor management of existing supplies. not that any batch would have any kind of shelf life since i don't subject them to desert heat inside a metal container.

For some reason I love the idea of these guys who load all of there mags to the full 30 rounds hearing a bump in the night. Then grabbing one of these mags  and slamming it in their AR15 with the bolt closed only to have the mag fall out in the dark.

I do keep one mag bra loaded with 7 loaded FAL mags and a mag bra loaded for the AR as well but all mags are down loaded by two rounds. That is only 126 rounds in one and 168 rounds in the other. That to me is a day at the range.

A quick note.
Springs wear via cycling (loading and unloading) not staying compressed or staying extended.

So if you want to extend the longevity of your mag springs keep them loaded or empty.

Even with lots of cycles the springs should be designed to flex within their limits and never appreciably wear.

All of my ar mags stay loaded but, I only have 5.

I don't keep every mag I own loaded 24/7/365. I have some AR and pistol mags in my vest, on my War Belt, some in my truck, and some in my BUG. The rest remain empty until I want to use them.

As far as loaded mags and springs go...

Last year before teaching a Carbine Course I was looking for something unrelated to magazines.

On a storage rack on the bottom shelf all the way in the back I found an ammo can marked "Y2K." When I opened it I found seven max-loaded 30 round GI mags and several 30 round boxes of IMI M855.

I had totally forgotten about that ammo can and the mags and ammo in it all those years. Those seven mags were the first mags I used when I taught the course later that day. I didn't have one hiccup or malfunction with any of them. They ran flawless after being loaded for more than 12 years.

The rifle is a factory Colt Government Carbine.

Excellent info in that post ^

Thanks, Joe!

Was hoping someone would chime in with some data regarding stored mags and time-in-storage...just out of curiosity, were the mags you had marked Y2K topped off to 30, or as most have been taught 29 (or 28)???

G

ETA...oops!, re-read and saw that you were topped off to 30 on your mags.
thanks, Joe!

I never download and have a similar story although a couple years short of joe. Had my friend in Juneau find a ammo can I left up there with loaded mags and I told him to go shoot them. 6+ years no malfunctions

After reading a few of these responses and talking to some other friends that do store fully loaded mags, I see that there is wisdom in having more than one or two mags at the ready.

Needless to say, I am still not going to load every freakin' mag I own...but am definitely going to load 10 or so that I will keep in 'ready' status.

I appreciate the input from you guys on this.

G,

I don't "download" any of my mags, because, keeping them maxed doesn't affect function (or spring resistance) and all of my mags seat on closed bolts on all of my rifles (even my Frankenguns).

A lot of the GI mags I have I bought in the early 90's and they have the original springs and followers.

Go figure.

Mine aren't all loaded now, because I just went shooting. But normally, I keep them all packed.

Can't imagine why I would need to FO and deploy 1,000 rnds of ammo, but it's an option. Mostly I keep them loaded because when I get a hair up my ass to go shoot, I just grab them and go. I can sit around in my living room with the TV on and a beer in my hand packing them, instead of burning daylight at the range.

Also, knowing I have so many mags loaded makes it easier to keep track of how much ammo I have on hand VS loose rounds in a can.

I have six loaded 30's in my vest, four on my War Belt, three in my BOB, a few in my truck, 10 loaded in the safe, and one in each rifle. The rest of the mags are empty.

That's about it.

Oh, and I have keep three loaded 20's.

Keep 4 loaded AK mags (enough for chest rig or plate carrier).
4 Loaded AR mags at the ready, with an ammo can containing 10 loaded PMags.

Battlebelt has 3 loaded Glock mags.

"The Bin" has a LOT more mags, the cans have a LOT more ammo, some in bandoleers on strippers.

Marlin .357 lever carbine is loaded with 10rds of 125gr .38spl +P for around the house.

Every single one of my four hundred and eighty-seven standard capacity magazines are loaded to bursting...........

Why?

Because it makes me a sad panda to ponder the possibility that I could die a tragically ironic death while desperately trying to load one of my hundreds of empty magazines, surrounded by my epic ammo fort during the upcoming EBT Cutoff/Christian Rapture/Angry Immigrant/Viral Infection/Alien Invasion/Zombie Apocalypse.

This is the fear that reading GD has instilled in me...........and I live with it every day.

Actually, earlier Rossi Interarms revolvers are not bad guns, and it's hard to tell them apart from S&W's.

Once Taurus got involved with the company the quality went somewhat downhill.

I use to keep them loaded to save time loading them when I wanted to shoot.  Then I ran out of ammo, started thinking compressed springs are a bad thing, and now I store them empty because I don't have enough ammo.

45 next to the bed is loaded.  Couldn't get to the others in time even if they WERE loaded.

In all honesty, I have moved from a G26 to a G29.  1 ten and 2 fifteens.  It seems adequate.
4 loaded 30s for the KISS / light weight 16" AR of my own design.  Its a proven weapon.

I have quite a few loaded mags laying around, but not even close to all of them.  I have 6 AR mags and 2 G17 mags on my plate carrier sitting in the garage.  Just there to remind me how heavy that shit gets and how much I miss Iraq and Afghanistan.

We had our big Waldo Canyon fire here last year while I was in Afghanistan, so I decided to put a couple bug out chests together so my wife could bug out with the offspring if needed.  I do have about 200 rounds of 9mm loaded in G17 mags and another 6 AR mags in there.  Just cause I can.  Rest is packed with camping gear.  Dual purpose set up for recreation(who doesn't shoot when camping?) and if we have to relocate during an emergency.  I had purchased another 20 G17 mags before this wonderful CO mag ban went into effect.  I stuffed some full with the 200 rds of 147HP WWB that I had as it's been sitting around anyway.

What I actually have inside the house is a couple mags for the Glocks and 1 for the AR.  Enough to give someone a bad day.  I have more flashlights in the house than loaded mags.

I never download mag capacity.  The only ones that are, are my mags in the plate carrier.  They have the original style Magpul Ranger plates and 30 rds don't fit.  They are downloaded to 28.

I hate zombie shit.
