Well i wanted to take my Friend shoooting for the first time so since i live in La verne and he lives in North hollywood i decided to go shoot at The FIRING-LINE in Burbank since might as well go down there and see some old friends.

So i always Load up my mags prior to going to the range so i can just put the target on and shoot to save some time.I have went to Magnum range in  Rancho Cucamonga and La puente firing Range and they have always checked my ammo and saw that i have Loaded my mags(I keep all my ranges stuff in a tool box Ammo, eyes and ears, speedloader etc.)I also LOCK my pistol in a seperate case so i Put tthe tool box in the front and my LOCKED UNloaded pistol in the back. And they have never said anything about the loadedmags and i thought it was ok.

Well so i got into the FIRING-LINE in Burbank and we sign the liabilty forms and he asks to check my ammo,so i let him. Then all hell breaks loose. He goes What the hell!! YOU KNOW THAT IF U GOT PULLED OVER YOU AND YOUR BUDDY WOULD HAVE GOTTEN ARRESTED!!CUZ THE MAGAZINE IS PART OF THE GUN AND U LOADED THE MAGS!OMG NEXT TIME KNOW THE LAW!.........................Me:Oh really i didn not know that ill keep that in mind.So we left

Ok is this really Illegal to have the mags loaded in a car?I think if even though he might be correct he should of handled it correcty and not acting like a ASS.I will never go there again.

While who can say in the wonderland in which you reside, but in most of the rest of the country that guy would be considered FULL OF SHIT.

Loaded mags, NOT IN the pistol or rifle, DOES NOT constitute a loaded weapon.

to my knowledge, you are ok, and transporting legally.
if the gun and loaded mag were seperate from each other but in the same container/area it COULD be considered a loaded gun.
if you were pulled over and the cop sees the gun case, i believe you are required (if asked) to show him the gun to prove its unloaded. you shouldnt have to do that with your ammo/range bag, and being locked they would need a warrant to search it.

why would the range want to check your ammo? i assume to make sure its not steel core.

i would find the exact law regarding this, and if you are in the right, then print it out and shove it up the guys ass.

assuming you dont have a trunk, i would still keep the ammo/range bag in the far back of the vehicle next to the locked gun, just the fact that its up front with you (not that its illegal) could raise some suspiciions on the part of the cops.

There is some question as to whether or not a loaded magazine in the SAME CONTAINER is considered a "loaded" weapon.  IIRC in one or more of code sections dealing with gang members it is specifically defined as loaded.  But in the sections dealing with normal circumstances, the law is ambiguous.  I have been told by someone who is in a position to potentially deal with it  (family LEOs)  that  as long as the pistol is locked  in a container and the mags are in another container you are fine.  A lot of folks say that having them in separate locked containers will definitely eliminate the problem.

Part of the problem seems to be that  courts in different parts of the state have come to different  conclusions on the question and the State Supreme Court has not addressed it.

Notice I said "seems", "may"  and since you didn't mention what the mags are for, the rules for assault weapons and pistols are different from rifles.  Sounds like you weren't illegal.

BTW - the loaded gun in a vehicle is a Fish & Game Code violation in addition to Penal code.
