From time to time there has been talk of various "someones" wanting to open a longer distance shooting range in the Southern Kentucky / Middle Tennessee / Northern Alabama area.

There was one person opening a range down near the Huntsville, AL area and offering memberships.
There was another asking if we would be interested in a range near middle Tenn. and what we thought the membership rate should be.

Has anything ever come of this talk or is it still just talk?

I believe the person that started this particular discussion is hoping to have something to show this summer.  I for one am very interested in his venture and hope it becomes a reality.

Here is a link to Alabama Tactical Shooters site.

They are supposedly going out to 1000 at some point in the future. I have not heard any updates lately.

Yeah, the one for middle tn was pretty recent. Sounded like they were still in the feasibility study phase. It would take some time to not only construct what they were talking about but also to get all the necessary business licences and insurance and other red tape stuff. It would be difficult to open a quality facility in one years time, and have everything done correctly so that it would be sustainable over a long period of time.

That said, it sounded like if they get it going it will be a nice facility as they are trying to do everything correctly. I would also like to see it happen soon, but you have to realize that for it to be a long term thing there is a lot of behind the scenes stuff that would need to be accomplished first.

I think the problem with opening a new 1000 yard range is that land is so much more valuable when used for other development.  It costs a lot to buy up that much real estate plus surrounding buffer area just to shoot across it.  The 1000 yard range where I belong is only there because they've owned the land forever.

Thanks for the link. I'm looking for a place to shoot tannerite targets.

Thanks for the link.
It looks like I may be going to Anniston in the morning and if I do, I'll stop in Albertville to check this out.

I had the opportunity to talk with Barry Harbin, Alabama Tactical Shooters' Range Director today.
We visited the site and discussed their plans for the range.

They have done quiet a bit of earthwork but still have a lot to do.  Due to wet weather not much
has been done for the past couple of months and that has put them a bit behind schedule.
Their plans are to have separate ranges for both pistol and rifle.  Rifle ranges will include
short 100, 200, 300 yard ranges; intermediate 500 and 600 yard ranges; and long
1,000 yard ranges.  The 600 yard berm is almost completed and should be operational by
early summer.

We can expect to hear more about the facility later this year as they get various projects completed.

Thanks for the update. Sounds like it is going to be a while before they get out to 1000.
